Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler - Stock GM

I have an 83 c10 suburban heavy half that i recently dropped a new motor and trans in (350/ 700r4) This is my daily driver and runs great, just drove it 2800 miles across the country in 3 days with 0 issues.

But here's the question - when I got it, the motor had an external oil cooler on it but no external trans cooler. I haven't hooked up the old oil cooler because I don't want the old motors junk to float into my new motor. I want to keep it stock gm with the oil cooler but am having trouble finding the correct one and the appropriate lines. Can any point me in the right direction here?

This car will see a couple more cross country drives and will tow my other cars on occasion which is why I want a trans cooler. Any one have any recommendations? Did gm make have an option that I could get. I don't want to get a cheep aftermarket one but don't want to drop more on the cooler than i did the trans.

I run an additional 24000 GVW external cooler.


The tranny pressure lines goes into the radiator. The radiator to the external cooler back to the tranny.

I *think* the external oil cooler was RPO KC4, which could be ordered separately on some models and was packaged with the towing option(s) in some cases.

I do not recall GM offering a separate trans cooler for our trucks.

Thanks for all the help. Does anybody know where I can get replacement parts for the oil cooler. I still have everything, but don't want the old gunk to flow through the engine.

Can I have it boiled out?

that might work...ide try some oil additives and just like push then through it

Yep - if you've got all the pieces then I'd try just flushing it out. Use some paint thinner or commercially available "oil flush" and run it through (backflush: run it through backwards, too, if possible)

or you could always give it too me and ile take cair of all that...then put it on my truck for a while...you know, to test it out

Im a little hesitant to attach it and flush it, the crap in it will either float into the motor or the thinner will work so well that it could hurt bearings by flushing oil out of the motor too.

I'm going to see if a shop will boil it out, but if not does anyone know where I can get an oem piece...if not then I will just go aftermarket.

I don't think Keith meant to flush it out while connected to the motor, but rather while it's off the truck and in your hands simply fill it with some solvent like mineral spirits and let it sit for awhile. Rinse and repeat till the solvent comes out clear.

pyro: I don't know what I was thinking when I typed that...just been on eof those days. I will wash it out this weekend when I get a chance and put it all back together when I get the tranny cooler set up.

Yes - like if you have a parts washer with a pump on it. You could flow the solvent through it both ways and flush it out pretty good.

Lather... rinse... repeat!
