To me it looks like body rot and it was just covered up.

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

Its a factory access hole that the cover has rotted off of . basically the same type cover you built for it . Put a little something on that rust to prep it and keep it from growing and the cover will keep it covered for a while .

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

Yep. Mine is doing the same thing.

I don't remember why that's there. In Flint, the wheel liners (inner wheelhouse) was subassembled to the fender upstairs on the second floor and the whole assembly swung down into place on the truck, so there was no need to access anything in behind there.

That's not to say the other assembly plants (Oshawa, St Louis, etc) didn't have a different assembly sequence and needed to have that separate part.

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

PS - are replacement panels for that available, or do you have to make your own?

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

Could they be some kind of reinforcement? That's what I always assumed they were for.

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

That is very common in these trucks. Seems to affect both sides as well unless its already been replaced before.

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

Both sides on mine are rusted through.....just haven't bothered to fix it. Figured it lets the front of the cab breathe.

Re: ??? hole in wheel well

That happens because of the reinforcing plate there. It's just 2 pieces of metal that are overlapped. Water and other stuff get in there and let it rust out...
