do I add power brakes or not if so how?

Just bought 71 cheyenne 30600 original miles from old man in kentucky super solid has alot of options but not power brakes going to spruce up. I have 3 other 71 and 72s garage full. Thinking about adding power brakes what beside buying brake booster and mounting to fire wall and installing master cylinder on that do you have to do? Or do you think I should just leave every thing totally original It still has the original wheel covers.

Re: do I add power brakes or not if so how?

if u wanna convert to pb, i think its great i did and dont regret it

u need booster, and rod from booster to brake pedel from a power brake truck

you'll need to adjust brakelite, simple but a pita

and run a big vacum line for the pb

any more ? just ask

theres a write up in the faq

That low miles and that original makes for a rare truck.I don't think I would add the PB unless I was keeping it.A hard core restoration freak may want it and adding PB may make it less desireable to someone like that.

I don't think it's necessary unless you have very weak legs.

Don't mean to divert from the original post.

Hey big al... did you notice any changes in the braking when you added the larger dia. wheels in
terms of the stopping power of a manually based system?

Hey Nate
We redid the complete brake system new hoses, lines, wheel cylinders, manual master cylinder, prop valeve, rebuilt the calipers. The truck stops very good even with the big motor and big wheels. It does not stop on a dime like my 4 wheel disc el camino did but it stops nicely and once you get used to the pedal it is all good. I am still going to do four wheel disc (willwood or Baers) with new air ride in the near future.I only drive my truck on the weekends here and there so it was not big deal.

Dads71, It's early here still, and I need to see a picture of that original 30K truck before I can make up my mind, but I tend to agree with PanelDeland.

I went from 15" aluminum to 15" rally's (+16lbs on each wheel) there was a very noticeable difference in braking. It only took a few drives to get used to it.

Re: do I add power brakes or not if so how?

Thanks for the information big al and Jim PA!

I personally don't see the need to upgrade w/ a power booster, but that is my own opinion. If I were to drive it daily I would consider upgrading the system.

Re: do I add power brakes or not if so how?

I would add the PB. I think overall your average joe would want PB. Also, I don't think it would hurt the value any. If someone wanted to return it to stock, it would take no time flat.

I don't think you will get enough money back out of it to cover the conversion and time to add PBs. If your goal is to flip it spend you time on wax, Armor-All and elbow grease, that will pay off better.

Re: do I add power brakes or not if so how?

Thanks all for your replys I picked truck up today after work the old man hasent washed it in a while I took pics of him signing over title and also pics of him in front of his old truck pretty cool evening. I cant believe this thing only has 30912 miles on it I was a little off when I said 30600 but I havent seen a 71 with that low of mileage before. On the manual brakes my other trucks have power brakes this manuel brake truck seems weird I push down and its real hard get some squeeks out of peddle is that norm? I spent 4 hours washing and cleaning interior took buffing pad and polishing compound to passenger side and waxed just to see what would happen it buffed and waxed great I think I got 1 of a kind just wish it was a short box if somebody could walk me through steps of posting pics I would love to do that just not that good at computers. Thanks again

I added power booster to my '69 with drums on all 4's; didn't change the pedal, didn't un-cork a line, took about an hour!
