Engine Verification
I am new to the forum and not the most computer literate person out there. I just purchased a 1972 Blazer 2WD. It is a "drivable project". I have two questions: 1. I would like to know how to determine if the engine is the original engine. 2. It came with a wore out canvas top, no hard top, so any direction on a canvas replacement or a used hard top would be appriciated.
For those interested, it came from the factory with P/S, P/B, A/C and automatic but it is not a CST, it has the rubber floor mat and does not appear to have ever had a rear seat. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Engine Verification
Welcome to the board. We would enjoy seeing pics of your Blazer - two wheel drives are very diserable around here!!! Used hard tops show up in the classified section occasionally. You'll also find a recent post in this section for new soft tops - only one manufacturer is building them presently.
I'll let someone else discuss your engine question.

Re: Engine Verification
There is a flat "pad" on the passenger side of the block right below the head in the front. It will have some numbers and letters on it. Get the 3 letters after the numbers. This is refered to as the engine suffix code.(trucks will start with a T and cars will start with a C, TJL for example) I can look this up for you or you can do a web search. They will tell you what this engine was originally out of.

Re: Engine Verification
Turp, I don't mean to be a bother but do you know if single vs double wall hard tops bolt down the same. On the glovebox sticker the option # is 1Z5810 Removable Top-White.
Thanks, Bill |

Re: Engine Verification
Double wall bolts go "up" from under rail. Single wall bolts go "down" from top of rail. Single wall has stainless strips that go over the glass lip where the top meets the bedsides. Some bedrails have both sets of holes and others do not. The single wall holes actually have a cage nut welded to the bedrail with a slotted hole for a little adjustment. You could just use a nut and bolt but would have to remove the interior panels to access the nuts. No bother, glad to be of help!

Re: Engine Verification
No, I wish it was. I have not taken the rubber floor mat out yet, but can already see "rust through" in the floor, next to the doors and kick panels.
The bottoms of each door will have to be replaced, the tail gate will need replacing. The Blazer was "resprayed" a few months ago, so who know what is under the fresh paint, but I still think it is worth saving. Thanks for all your help, Bill |
