Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
Just curious to see if anybody has gone out on a limb and installed a non-Chevy/GMC engine in their truck.. What did you install and how's it working for you? This could open the door to some interesting projects...
If you installed a F**D engine, please give us your home address... We need to talk! |

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
if you gave me a 427 SOHC ford engine... it'd get installed in a heartbeat.
My 70 longhorn had a pontiac 350 in it when I got it back in 02, but I slapped a cad big block in it pretty quick. The torque is awesome. One day I'll stop useing old worn out ones and see what they are actually capable of. |

Ok, one dose of a** rippin' on the Ford engine guy(s). Are you REALLY telling me you couldn't have dug up a junk yard 350 for next to nothing?? Think before you drink! And yeah, the Ford 427 is a great engine, but I'd take a GM 409 or 427 first... But that's just me... This could get pretty good... |

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
Have heard of Olds and Buick motors, and few guys on here with Cadi motors. There is one with a jet engine.. lol.. cummins diesels and such too. The Duramax is really isuzu, and a few of those have been in these trucks.

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
In the mid 1980's I did a 440 with a 727 in a beater C-10. It was much better than the 307 with the giant hole in the side of it and I got the motor and trans for $50 (along with the car it came out of... I sold the car to the crusher for $60).

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
One of my friends has run 455 Buicks in his 72 I think car hauler for years.
I have a 455 Olds out in the milk house that was going in my 51 Merc but now may end up in the 71 GMC rather than a 500 Cad or 383 stroker. You could bolt an Olds in the Square bodys and probably the 67/72 with factory parts used on the 350 diesel rigs from the early 80's. |

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
Why replace a motor that can`t be beat?Especially an Edsel motor?I can see doing a diesel swap and that`s about it.I`m not opposed to other GM motors, just not sure why.I`ve considered a Caddy just to be different and to mimmick a typical rodder swap back in the day when that was the best way to get more power over a flathead or straight-6.

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
if you think the caddy 429 is strong, then you should look into the 425/472/500. they make the old outdated overweight under powered 429 cad look like a 305.

Here's how I ended up with my Longhorn: If any of you are familiar with the west coast, we have a thing called the Pomona Swap Meet. MILES of cars and parts for sale, held about every 2 months... I went out to sell the Caddy. A guy pulled in behind me with what is now my truck. I didn't sell the Caddy, but met up with him the next day and bought the truck! The rest is history... |

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
Best Pomona Swap Meet memory: We went out the night before and drank all night... (just sody pop of course!). I got about an hour's sleep in a beach chair behind my Cadillac. I was woken up by a '69 Camaro backing up with his buddy guiding him back so his bumper didn't hit me in the head. That is a good trip to Pomona!

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
after rereading my post... I want to make sure you know I wasn't trying to "diss" your cad 429.
There's acually an older guy around the corner from here who has a cad 429/TH400?gear vendors in a 67 C/30 daul rear wheel custom flat bed rig... sweet truck, and he loves his 429. |

Re: Engines other than Chevy/GMC??
I have a thing about dropping Olds motors in Chevys. A couple of 73 to 80's got Olds 455's....a couple of El Caminos got Olds motors. My 69 almost got a 425 Olds dropped in it.

Short story: I have a buddy with a '63 Lincoln with a 430 and slightly lower gears. My caddy would whoop his a** at any speed, any time! Made me feel good. |
