Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

I am in the process of restoring a 68 SWB chevy truck. It has a 350 in it right now which I am going to pull in the next few weeks. I'm not sure if it is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt main. Won't know until I pull the motor. I want to make a 383 stroker out of it if it is a 4 bolt main. Does anyone know of a good reasonable reputable engine builder in the Dallas area that can take this 350 and make a stroker out of it for me? If so please let me know I'm lookin!

Thanks,

James

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

If you're building an engine under about450-500 HP the two bolt is plenty strong. If you're going to build for more and use a factory block have it machined for 4 bolt main caps. The aftermarket ones are splayed and are usually considered stronger than the factor5y 4 bolts.

When you say aftermarket ones are splayed what do you mean by that? Aftermarket what? Main caps or blocks?

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

I use City Motor Supply (Harry Hines and Forest Lane) for most of my machine work and have never had any problems. I don't know that I would want them building a supper throw down high horsepower motor but for stock to mid range stuff I would go with them every time. For me, they have been faster and cheaper every time. I'm taking my BB there next week...... I hope.

The mains are splayed. The outermost holes of a 4 bolt main go in at an outward angle (kind of similar to the shape of the block if you're looking at the bottom). Both the main cap and block are splayed. IMO, no need for this unless you're running REAL high horsepower.

Call them. They were one of my accounts when I worked at Cloyes Gear (I managed the high performance parts line). They have a nice shop, use good parts and know what they're doing. I wish i could remember the owners name, he was a super cool cat and I have no qualms recommending him. I wouldn't let Blaine's change my oil. Dang sure wouldn't want City Motor building my street stomper either. Not trying to bad mouth, just speaking from what i know to be true, from working in the engine parts industry!

well, that's a shame then... I left Cloyes in 2006, so I wouldn't know past that. I do, however still have some contacts down there, so I can make some calls if need be.

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

if you are interested, i have a 355 at my parents house in houston. has all the machine work already done, bored .030 over, pistons and everything. to make this a 383, all that you would need is the 400 crank. i don't have any pics of it at the moment, but i'll give you a good price on it. just let me know

I am dealing with this hell myself right now. If you start dealing with machine shops and figure your time in on the deal, those crate engines look so much better. I can't find a machine shop in DFW worth using.

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

I have a great machine shop that does all our work here for the shop. When we built my motor he did all the machine work for it, but if this motor blows up I am definetly using a crate motor next time won't be going thru all that machine shop non sense..

I hear yah! My town doesn't have very many builders, we have two, one tells me that if my compression ratio gets above 8.5-1 I can't run pump gas and wants to charge an arm and a leg, and the other has problems with certain manufactuers, mainly comp cams and he wont use fully assembled heads ugh , I bought a crate pretty happy with it

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

When you make a 383 stroker out of a 350 block, the block has to have clearances ground in it for the crank to clear. You can't just drop a 400 crank in it and go.
I have used City Motors to build a 383 stroker for me with no problem. They install new cranks in all their strokers.
Try M&M Machine in Dallas. Mitchell is a sole proprieter and operator. He does great work, and alot of dirt track engines. He builds all my HP engines, balances and blueprints them. I turn my cast crank 454 built by him 6500 with no problem.

Have you ever heard of Farris Automotive? He's right down 199 between Springtown and Azle. He just built me a 496, and did a 582 for a friend. A ton of experience flowing through that shop. Also reasonable on price. The only thing he is not equipped to do is grind cranks, which he outsources. I would highly recommend looking him up. His phone number is 817-221-1590.

If you are up for a small drive.....give him a call he will treat ya right.

There are machine shops all over but most of them are to the south of you or to the west of you.

Bud Morgan
Arlington Machine
Mike Smith
Farris Racing
Ray Mac
Kim Barr

just to name a few

I use performance automotive on samual blvd. close to big town blvd. They are a little $$ but the quality of work is awsome. they will set down with you and find out exactly what you will be using the truck for or what you want and build to those specs.

Re: Looking for engine or engine builder in Dallas Area

Calvert's in Denton
Jim Anderson had a shop like a city motors where they cranked out about 70 motors a day, but he has retired and now does motors out of his home. He's done 5 for me and is very reasonable. Engines Xtreme is the name, he's in Flower Mound. Take 121 west to 2499 and he's just east of 2499 and 3040.

I saw Kim Barr in another post above and he does really nice work.

Just wanted to follow up on this. I dropped my block off yesterday at Farris Racing Engines. I dealt with Shane Farris. I got pretty good vibes about the whole deal. He said he'd get me out this week (vat, bore and cam bearings). I will update when I get the block back.
