i can't beleive the way some guys will hold onto information about wheels and backspace and what fits and what doesn't i have a 68 stepside with 23,000 original miles that needs some wheels. i would like to put the biggest set of wheels and tires front and back i can but i have no idea what will fit. i do not want to compromise steering or any of the originality of the truck. i'm thinking 18's up front and 20's in the rear. maybe even 20's and 22's. please help me!!!

One thing we will need to know is your drop. Clearance is affected by stance! Are you still with the 6 lugs? Choices are real slim with those.

255/35 20" will fit on a dropped truck with a 5" backspace. It will be a little over an inch from the tire to the frame at the rear. Not sure on the backspace on the front but its about the same. Thats on a truck dropped 4 to 5"

the truck is 3 1/2 inches lower in the front with drop spindles and springs. rear is 4 inches lower with springs. thanks

Well, you won't be able to run more than an 8.5" or 9" wide tire up front without running into problems with steering geometry. I'd go with a 20"x8.5" or 22"x8.5" with 4 1/2" BS on the front and a 22"x10" with 5" BS on the rear.

Edit: Above information is for a bagged truck or a truck with a 4"/6" drop or more.

When you drop these trucks the front wheels are pushed out a lot! Im running 8 X 15 convos in front with 2.5" inch drop spindles and 3" dropped springs. I had to cut the lips off my lower control arm and run a 1/4 spacer to get them to not hit the arm and tear up my inner wheel lip. Now I have to box in my control arms in.
With rims as big as you want it will be less hassle when it comes to the control arms being in the way, but be careful when you turn hard in either direction so you dont start shaving the inside of your rims off.
Dont be afraid to grind and cut cause you might have to.
You might be better off getting a set of narrow tubular A arms. The problem is going to be your turning radius.
