To cut or not to cut
Greetings members
I can consider myself a purist when it comes to restoring or building a car. On my current build (Project Brown Hornet), I am trying to decide what to do concerning installing a new radio. Do I cut the dash to install an up-to-date DIN style receiver or, do I opt to leave it as is and go with an old skool shaft style set up? These shaft style head units are getting harder and harder to find and, are pretty pricey when you can actually find them. You guys have all been so helpful on my current build that, I am just trying to get a consensus of the best way to go about this. My dad and I didn't cut the dash on my 68' Camaro when we restored it 20+ years ago and I would not like to start with this one either.....................

they have new aftermarket dual posts out as well, some with some very nice features. As to the beset brand name im not sure, i have old kenwood dual posts in both my 77c10 and my 80 camaro, and an alpine sitting on my shelf, i buy them when i see them if they are nice for the right price.

Thanks. I have seen them out there but, I can not justify spending $ 200.00 plus on one of these aftermarket jobs even if they do have all of the bells and whistles of the newer model head units. I may go the route that you did and see if I can score one of the old shaft styles from Craigslist or Ebay. I may have to stop by the local pawnshop and see what is around. I knew I should have kept the Kenwood I had in my 76' Stingray that I sold almost (5) years ago. I miss that car but, it had to go for engagement ring money..............Best decision I ever made...........

if it means selling the engagement ring you are just going to have to sell it or else i fear for the results of project brown hornet. could be doomed b4 it starts. she will understand in time, that this is a chevy truck for christ's sake. CUT IT!! you can replace the dash's on these trucks for $20 at a junkyard

But it is MY truck, and I shall do with it as I please. If I ever decide I want to go back stock, I can ALWAYS pull a dash out of another cab and put it in my truck, it's not comoplicated. Won't happen though! Not many 68 Camaro's laying around, but square bodies are everywhere.

This is what mine looks like after I cut my dash. I can see the point of others that are going to cringe at the very thought of cuting you dash but like a few others have said it is your truck cut if you like. I personally think that my install looks factory.
You can get the install kit I got from crutchfeild. They send it free if you buy your radio from them.

Thanks guys. I will take all points in consideration. I did have a NIB Sony head unit that I gave to my brother-in-law for a present this past Christmas.......if only I was thinking ahead!!!!!!!!!! The girl I sold my Stingray for is now my wife and the mother of my one (and soon to be two) kids. I believe she has an understanding but, she does not really have the grasp of what I had to do to buy her the ring............a 76' Stingray.....................Oh well. It was for a good cause and I can always buy another one but, a good woman only comes around once in a lifetime..........

I, above all others will tell you to cut it.
I understand why you wouldn't want to cut it, but in a truck like this, it really isn't THAT big of a deal. Even if it were a points truck with 0 miles it still wouldn't be worth a ton of money... Once I get some time and some mroe parts I'm going to be doing a write-up for modern stereo system that everyone can do without cutting anything. Just need a few parts and some time alone with my aunt's C30... Don't suppose any board vendors wanna help a brotha' out...?

I cut the dash in my old 86 to install a DIN unit. When I cut the sheet metal,I just folded the pieces back so it could of been fixed later on...

I'm for a din unit. I just like how thw din controls function better than shaft style. I do think it's silly to have the stock radio that you never use right in hands reach while the real radio is hidden out of reach. Plus a shaft style radio that costs $350 is basically equivilent to a $150 DIN unit, feature and power wise (as best as I can tell.
