What does Custom Camper mean?

I can't find anywhere what it means (option wise) to be a custom camper.

Do any of you know? I'm sure this will be an easy one for ya.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

I can tell you that is 1968 it meant the following according to the GM Restoration Guide:

Custom Camper Nameplate: Pickup models only; see page 2 of Recreational Vehicles section for minimum requirements.

I have been looking for this section ever since!!!!! Gotta love the General! I believe that Longhorn Man has this one memorized however and we will probably never know how he came across the information. It might have been listed in one of the Chevrolet Camper and RV sales folders.

Good luck...I will copy it down when Andy (LHM) responds this time.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

Found it in my '68 truck sales brochure: C10...Nameplate, front stabilizer, 2000 lb rear springs or 500 lb auxilliary springs, hd shocks, choice of three tires.

C20...all of the above but 3000-lb rear springs or 500-lb auxilliary springs, and many tire choices.

C30...all of the above but 3100 or 4150-lb rear springs, 7.00-16 or 7.50-18 Dual Rears, 7.00-18 Dual Rears, 8-16.5 Single or Dual Rears, 8.75-16.5, 9.50-16.5, 10-16.5.

So the nameplate was available in all three models as long as you had the HD (for that model) tires, springs, stabilizer, and shocks.

I thought at some point they also offered a different wiring harness to connect to the camper for 12v. power as well.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

Things like camper mirrors and other things were typically ordered, but not part of the package. You could have all the stuff a Custom Camper had, just not as cool w/o the badge .
optional power was "required" in both 6s and 8s.No 250s or 307s.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

I think they typically did NOT have the Eaton rear end, but went with a Dana with 3.73 or 3.56 gears instead of 4.10's.

Says nothing about engine options, rear axles, gear ratios, none of it.
Just HD springs OR overload springs, tires, and an anti sway bar.

Question: Mine is a Longhorn, but not specifically a Camper Special. It has all the HD spring and shock options... but it didn't come with a front sway bar. Have you seen this before? Almost every 67-72 I've seen had one (but I know not all did). Just thought this was unusual.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

My senerio was pretty crazy too. My Custom Camper also came with THE CAMPER from the dealer. I have all the original paperwork. Kinda funny. They had a big ole 5 pin connector in the cab and the bed side. Tons of thick gauge wire running all through the frame and engine compartment. I'm sure that looked interesting rolling out the dealer parking lot.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

That is very interesting. So it seems that it is a more HD option pack. I think I will definitely keep the emblem and display is proudly. I wasn't thinking of removing it anyway.

Thanks for all the info.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

Both of my trucks are cheyenne specials with the camper special option. Both came with dual batteries. Wiring for the camper. Dana 60's with 4:10's. One is a big block one small. Both leaf spring rears. Dual tanks. Camper mirrors. Cargo lights. Sliding rear windows.

Re: What does Custom Camper mean?

everytime this comes up, there's people making things confusing to members who don't quite know whats what with the trucks.
The stuff listed on the page I posted, was alll that you got with the custom camper package.
The extra battery, harness and all that other stuff, was added options, not part of the package.
Also, remember, untill 73, the camper special was a ford, and there's never been a cheyenne special.
