Best offroad tire for daily driving.

My truck has 40 ground hawgs right now but they are on their last leg. The p.o. ran em for years and they've got plugs and gashes galore. They've also lost probably about four inches of tread. What should iget this time around? This truck is my daily driver so i'm going smaller (probably 35's) but i want a good looking tire that does great offroad and good on the street. I'm still considering another set of ground hawgs but i need something pretty cheap. What have you guys found on a budget. Best value overall?

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

When I was dayly driving mine I ran Dunlop Mud Rovers, they lasted a long time. Like the BFG Mud tires.
Then I ran Swamper SSRs and thoes worked better off road and seam to were well on highway. I soldum before I could were um out..moved to a biasply Swamper Irok = off road 90% of the time.
Swamper radials are softer than the Mud tires from Dunlop or BFG so the Swampers will wear out faster but better offroad performance.
Never ran GHawgs so??

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

I`ve run SSRs on a heavy work truck and they lasted a couple years.not sure how many miles, but I drive a good bit to jobs all over.It wasn`t my only truck.I`d say I got 30+K from them.I don`t think Dunlop makes over 33s anymore,as with most companies.Mud Kings were a great value,no longer made.Plenty swear by BFG M/Ts.I know they give alot of miles in spite of the lugs.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

I am currently running Goodyear MTRs and I like them. Whatever tire you decide to buy check out The Tire Rack online. I have bought 4 sets from them ranging from little tires for my wifes 97 monte carlo, to my 35inch MTRs and even with freight I couldn't find a better deal anywhere. It could save you some $.

I've run several sets of BFG MTs and they held up well on the street and offroad. They last a lot longer than SSRs.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

Dick Cepek FC11. I ran a 285/75-16 on my 2500HD.Unlike most mud/all terrain tires they have excellent traction on wet roads and snow, because of the sipes on them. These tires are awesome. Nice pic on the link below.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

My experience BFG A/T's and Dick Cepek FC are great on/off road choices.
I've also heard good things with road manners of the Mickey Thompson ATZ's

PM me when your ready to buy some tires maybe I can help.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

The BFG's wear good on the street but i think the BFG A/T is not too impressive off road. I run dunlop rovers onmine and they have held up well. Also i have hear the thornbirds are horrible offroad from the jeep guys i wheel with but from some chevy guys i have heard good things... maybe the weight helps?

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

my 2 cents...I have had 35" BFG KMs and they seemed to get kinda bumpy and ride ruff shortly after the 50% tread wear. However, I did get around 50,000 plus miles outta them. Currently running Toyo Open Countrys and they seem to wear really well and perform pretty nice off road. I only have about 10,000 miles on them so far. I have Wildcat EXTs on my Blazer right now and they are really nice, but Les Schwab does not sell those any more. Just food for thought.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

i run cooper s/t/t tires and they hold up decently...wear faster than i would like but i was expecting more then i should have =/...i spent 200 a tire on the s/t/t tires and im glad i did...just my opinion though i've heard alot of bad things about s/t/t tires as well....bfg m/t tires are awesome by the way =P

These Interco Trxus have been on my truck for 3 years and I drive it a lot and long distances sometimes. Great in the mud and very little road noise. Oh, and this picture is when they were pretty new.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

My buddy runs Dick Cepek F-C IIs on his '00 Z-71 that gets the wheels driven off it around town, on the highway and gets its share of time in the woods. I've never been riding with him while in real deep mud or anything, so I can't vouch for that tire's performance there, but out in the woods around his hunting property it seems to do great, I'd say better than his Isuzu Trooper that has BFG A/Ts on it. And like I said, the truck gets a lot of pavement miles on it and I can definitely say that the tire performs great on the road, don't notice it at all on the highway, and he's been running the same set for at least three or more years now and still has plenty of tread left.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

bfg mud ko's hands down! good on road nice and quiet i ran 31s, static balanced with less than 2 oz on each tire good load handiling with their 3 ply side wall long lasting. a little spendy but well worht it. my 2cents and the most important part, awesome offroad just keep them spining and they'll dig through just about anything

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

I wanted to let everyone know what i got. I got some 33" Dick Cepek Mud Country's. My wheels were too wide to buy from tirerack. These tires are awesome looking. They have not worn a millimeter and i have driven them daily now for two months or so to work and back and all over town They are so wide that they look better than the ground hawgs i had. I had the tire shop mount me a 35" thornbird and i like the cepeks better by looks and performance. I reccomend them based just on the street manners and offroad performance. The price didn't hurt either- $850 for a set of four mounted and balanced and a spare mounted. They wanted almost that per tire for another set of 40" hawgs online. Plus the truck is much faster and has alot less problems now. Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Best offroad tire for daily driving.

If it's a around town and off road tire I'd go with Super Swampers any day. They are the best off road tire made imo. With lots of highway, not so sure what I would get. I am also running the Mickey Baja MTZ's and they are wearing really good.

One other thing about Swampers is they don't have the tendency of picking up rocks and throwing them like most other tires do.
