Tranny Question

Would aTH400 bolt up to my 250 six cylinder and is it difficult to find an automatic column? I would want to convert from my three on the tree.

Re: Tranny Question

Yes, it will bolt up...as far as the column, there are a lot of different routes to take, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find what you're looking for - I'm running a left-over Ididit column-shift, but some of the van and rebuilt units are available from the usual vendors.

if you're looking for an OE column, check out lilred66's post in the parts forum, he'll have what you need.

Re: Tranny Question

it takes alot of HP to turn the TH400. You might now want to put that behind a 6 cyl. But that choice is yours.

This is a 76 van column with a lower column from a 70's chevy truck.

Re: Tranny Question

I agree with Chevy Fleetside. A Th400 takes more power to turn it than say a TH350. Unless you already have the TH400, I would look for a TH350.

Re: Tranny Question

I've drag raced and continue to drag race both a PowerGlide and a TH400...the rotating inertia difference is negligible, and even more so on the street. If you have a good deal on a TH400, get it - they are tough transmissions and should give you years of trouble-free operation under even heavy loads. I currently have about 2000 hp in front of mine.

Thanks, I always said anybody who owned a pit was nuts.....would never have one. I sat two of them for a friend once and raved about them. My kids thought the old man didn't have enough grey hair, so they got me Hershey.

Vin, I think you will be able to take one zero off the end of yours to get my horsepower! Haven't got one yet...one of our members is considering selling his. St. Louis isn't too far away for me if it was a good tranny.

Then it would be from there to KCity to see Tony 'Lilred' to find a column. I need to move further west!

I didn't want you to get discouraged by the inertia resistance talk.

This is what I run in front of my TH400 and the transmission has held despite 50% nitro passes:
