Number Matching Geeks Only!

After significant research, cleaning and searching, I have documented my rear differential as original. The build sheet and POP have differential information I was hoping to confirm with the axle code. I searched this site and could not find information that helped me find the code ( my code was not in the same location as the only photo on the site). I came across a Camaro site that had exactly the info. I needed. My casting date was J 10 1 which is December 10, 1971. My axle code is RRR W354 1 which decodes to 1972 3.07 (open) built in Warren Michigan on the 354th day of 1971 on first shift. Attached are photos and sketch of info used and found.

Re: Number Matching Geeks Only!

I would bet that the vast majority of these rear ends are original. Given the fact that they are 12 bolts and usually just driven around, there is not too many reasons to change them out. Camaros and Chevelles are another thing. That very same Camaro.net site is where I ID'd my 12 bolt posi 67 Camaro rear end. It's an awesome site with tons of Chevy info. Great for decoding engines.

Re: Number Matching Geeks Only!

Heath is correct. No question, just what I believe to be useful information. Matching information has become an obsession. My SWB Big Block has excellent options and virtually everything I have checked has matching numbers. Engine, trans, rear axle matches build sheet and POP. Even things like alternator, starter, battery cable-codes and cluster number matches the build sheet. Not every one gets excited about things like this but I am always thrilled to find original tags and codes that match the factory documentation.

Thanks for sharing, I was familiar with the ratio codes and location but not the dates!
Here is a site that is good for reference that may help from time to time

Dan, when are you going to post more pics of your truck. I have never seen under hood shots, unless i have overlooked them.

Heath,

Here is the only decent under hood shot I have on my computer. Engine really needs detailed, but it is very original.

Hey there. Cool truck. Gotta love big-blocks! Like yours, my Longhorn came with some pretty cool options. I've been pulling apart the front of the engine this month. Funny thing is, I took out the power steering pump to replace the return line and got carried away. Last week I saw the casting number and date code on my water pump, researched it, and then found out it was a rebuild that came from some random '65 car.

I proceeded to look at every possible location on the truck for date codes (I caught the numbers bug too!). It turned out that (besides maintenance items) the whole truck, from the 396 and the Saginaw power steering gear to the Dana 60 rear end was correctly dated except for the water pump, alternator and A/C compressor. I don't have a complete build sheet, but according to the protect-o-plate, the date on the build sheet, and the warranty pamphlet, it's all correct.

Sorry if that's a little long-winded (didn't mean to hijack), but I share your enthusiasm for finding matching numbers and correct components .

Re: Number Matching Geeks Only!

Daves '72,

If you have the Protect-o-Plate in the warranty booklet the full stamped engine code will be on there. The trans code and rear axle code are also on the protect-o-plate. If you send a good quality photo of your protect-o-plate to me I will show you the codes to look for and help you find them.

Re: Number Matching Geeks Only!

Good info, Dan. I believe I know of the Camaro site your talking about. It does have some good info, doesn't it? I was able to decipher my POP, engine and axle codes from that site as well.
