Need info on 6 hole 16 inch wheels

Even with all of the Chevs and GMCs that have been hanging around here for so long I have never seen or had one with factory 6 hole 16 inch wheels - but a good friend says they exist and he needs some. Please help with my ignorance - when were such wheels common (are they still?) and on which trucks were they installed? Where should a guy look for them?

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Need info on 6 hole 16 inch wheels

They were not a common option for the average buyer. Usually found to the heavy duty 1/2 tons with the optional heavy duty springs. The 16" wheel pictured is the 1962 thru 1970 2WD version. The mid 70's 4x4 disc brake 1/2 ton version has a different design but should work.

Re: Need info on 6 hole 16 inch wheels

The 16-inch wheel was a staple of GM 1/2-ton trucks for decades. They may not be more than 5-inches wide, but they exist. An early "upgrade" for any Chevy built 1929 and later with a 6-hole wheel pattern, was to get the 6-hole 15's from the mid-50's and put 'em on. I had a friend in high school who had a '29 Chevy coupe that he bought for $100 (1962), then had painted with Pontiac Honduras Maroon. The wheels were off of a '56 Chevy pickup, and really made it look nice.

Re: Need info on 6 hole 16 inch wheels

Thanks for the responses so far - no wonder I have not seen any around here. Sounds like my buddy will need to take a careful tour through a junkyard that has a lot of older Chevs/GMCs.

I'm thinking the same thing. My first vehicle (at 13) was a '64 Chevy truck which had them. Scrapped the whole truck and got my second, which was a '68 Chevy truck .. which had them.

I just pulled them off and scrapped them, too. But, they were the original wheels on that old truck, formerly owned by the state of Michigan.

Re: Need info on 6 hole 16 inch wheels

the early 6hole rims prior to 1971 may not clear disc brakes on modern trucks due to different wheel profiles that were not made to clear discs

These wheels take the same hubcaps as any 1/2t wheel (5 or 6-lug) with nubs, regardless of rim diameter
