wanted - Fleet Custom Tail Light ideas - that look good

I have been pondering custom tail lights. My fleetside tail light openings have been screwdriver-screwed up by a previous owner. Bodywork and lexan/plexiglass work isn't a problem, I just don't want to end up with something hokey.

I know I know, the OEM light look nice and don't mess with perfection, but I like cutting things up... anybody saved any good idea photos?

of course, there's the zillion caddy light conversions.

I think some models of the caddy lights fit the style of the 67-72 much better than alot of the other cars/trucks people put the caddy lights in.
I got a few ideas for mine, but I'm not tellin(nanny nanny boo boo)

Personally, I'm not too keen on a Caddy conversion. When I look at the back of a vehicle, I look at the aesthetics of the overall fit of the conversion....like whether or not the contours are in agreement. Caddy lights that have been used may be straight on the inside edge, but the curve on the outer edge just doesn't fit "quite right" in my opinion.

What I like about MuscleRodz trim pieces is that the same lights, when tunneled (recessed about an inch or so), would still show the same contours as stock, yet be different.

As far as that goes, in my mind, anything that could be tunneled would be okay...to a degree. A pair of 59 Caddy bullets would be neat if they were tunneled. Maybe a set of '58 Chevy (non-Impala) would look nice, also tunneled. When you go to sticking them on the outside of the body, it ruins the overall appearance. I like a seamless look, and adding stuff on top of the body skin doesn't do anything for me.

I just have to get it in my head that it's okay to ante up $275 for a set of those. I think that includes new lenses, too. All you'd need after that is a ginormous set of LED's to hide behind the lenses. Yeah, maybe do a set of LED's with 5 vertical rows, that would flash sequentially, from the inside edge to the outside....ala T-Bird, Cougar, and......Caddy.

Just thinking without thinking- how would 69 Camaro taillights turned straight up look? They kinda have a similar shape to the truck B/U light. Don't laugh, I haven't really thought this through, and I didn't get much sleep last night. And I swallowed mouthwash this morning.

Too long to fit. I know you mean vertically, right? If you are thinking of putting them in a roll pan, then they would fit (space-wise) but they'd be too low for my tastes.

When I study the rear of this style and think about it, it's really a nicely designed look and hard to improve on.

i agree with that the caddy lights don't have the right contour And it's hard to beat the original design. i am planning on making my own tail light lenses though for my GMC project because i want all of the lense to illuminate for LEDs. i have been doing some research into vacuum forming, and plan to make some that won't have external fasteners for that smooth look. also plan to vac form the reverse lights the same way. there are some informative tutorials/videos on youtube about vac-forming. i still have'nt given a lot of thought how they'll mount from the inside but i'mm getting there.
