1990 K5 Blazer or 1993 K5 Blazer?

A friend of mine wants me to ask this question since he doesn't have any internet. He would like to build a 4WD setup and he has 2 options. He can get a 1990 K5 2 door Blazer for free that has no engine and tranny but has already been lifted and comes with new off rod tires. The other is a 1993 K5 2 door Blazer which has a good transmission 700r4 but has a blown 305. The cost of this will be 350 bucks. He said he likes the body look of the newer one better but he really doesn't care considering he's going to beat the hell out of it. I told him in that case the older one might be better because the body on the 1993 comes lower and that there is much much more glass on the 1993. And the 1990 has a solid axle(debatable due to some people liking the IFS). That and the fact that it comes with tires, lift, and it's FREE. But he already knows my reasoning. He wants others and asked me to post this. So if anyone would like to offer up their opinions, he'd be more than happy to hear them. He want pros and cons on both. And he said the A/C will not be hooked up on either.

If it is a mostly off-road toy, I would go with the 1990 straight axled truck. The whole IFS thing is supposed to make a truck ride more like a car in the street, so that is of no use to him. The older style truck will be more forgiving as far as breakdowns and will certainly cost less to fix if it does. Lifting the IFS truck will take a substantial investment too.

All in all, I would say that the '90 will cost less to get into in the first place and be a better off-roader in either case.

Definatly the`90 for all the reasons given by Longhair.Put a 4spd/205 combo in that thing and go from there. The front diff on the light weight IFSs is weak, too.I`m into going and doing whatever a rig can do.But,I`ve never set out to beat the crap out of it.I say try finess and give it he!! when necessary. For me,cool is the rule.Like Chester Cheetoh.

well he plans on taking it into the high Unita Ashley forest where he will take trails that start at around 6,000 feet and end up above 10,000 feet. Just to give you an idea.

It will also be easier to replace the 1/2 ton axles with some 1 tons when he wants to do some hard core wheeling later on...

I agree on the ifs stuff....it's fine for getting out of the snow or mud but it's just not meant for heavy duty off roading.

well here is what the stupid F|_|CK DID!!!....He bought both....sold the 1990 for four hundred bucks and bought the 93 with that money because it looked better. He wants to put in a solid axle and 5.3 gen 3. HE ALREADY HAD THE SOLID AXLE!!!! Hope he likes adjusting his doors every year as well as the interior falling apart. Not to mention the huge amount of glass he's going to break in the brush. LOOKS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Wow damn that was dumb! I would defiantly have taken the lifted '90 Blazer with the solid axle. Hope he has fun with the IFS and all the damn glass to break.
