Need some starter help....
The starter in my truck seems to have died.. I took it out ran to shucks and they said it tested fine? So I run back home throw her back in the truck and I get nothing? No click click no poof up in flames nothing. So I grab my handy screw driver and try to jump it on the solionod....nothing? However when I turn the ing key to the crank position the volt gauge drops down to 10 volts... Soooo anyone have any ideas here cause I also went to vato zone and they said it was good????????

Re: Need some started help....
did you ever think to check and see if your battery was charged or good?

Re: Need some started help....
Sounds like a bad cell in the battery to me.If it doesn't click or try to turn over the battery may be shorting when it has a draw applied.Just a thought.

Re: Need some started help....
Two places tested it & said it was good.... Bad battery sounds reasonable; even new ones can fail. If not that, maybe a bad cable or connection? I *think* poor connections can cause excessive current draw, which can result in a lower voltage reading.

Re: Need some started help....
Try running a jumper from the negative side of the battery to the starter housing to make sure you have a good ground. Also did they check the solenoid with the starter.

Re: Need some started help....
I swapped the solinoid as I thought that was what was wrong at first... I also ran a wire from the negitive battery post to the starter... same thing?

Re: Need some started help....
If you tried all this it has to be in the wiring. I would take the starter out and hook it to a battery with jumper cables then run a wire from the ign side of the starter to pos and see if it engages be careful as it will want to jump around. Make sure you are hooking the ign wire to the right post.

Re: Need some started help....
i had a bad ground one time that caused the same thing. i ran a ground wire from the block to the frame and then from the block to neg. side of the battery. it seemed to fix it.

Re: Need some starter help....
I have never had much luck using a battery charger to test a starter.
If I remember right it takes between 100 and 150 amps to kick a starter. It really sounds like you have a wiring or connection problem. Not long ago I was at a gas station filling up, when I went to start the truck-nothing. It turned out there was some corrosion on the battery terminals. The corrosion was not real visible, but when I cleaned the battery terminals and connections and hooked it back up it started without a problem. Danny

The battery charger does not have enough cranking amps to really spin the starter but it should turn it with no load.

Re: Need some starter help....
I think you may have a bad solenoid. I just went out to the garage and took one of my old starters and hooked to the charger and it spun right over. had to put the charger on manual

Re: Need some starter help....
A volt meter will tell you what you need to know. Put the red lead on the starter lug...the one after the solenoid and the black one in the center of the neg. post of the battery. Hit the key. If you don't get 12 volts, you have a voltage drop somewhere. Start backing up the circuit witht the red lead. First the other side of the solenoid, then the outside of the pos. terminal. If you do see 12 volts on the first measurement, start moving your ground lead. First the outside of the neg. terminal then the chassis, then the engine block. If you see 12 volts from the case of the starter to the starter lug of the starter...go buy a starter.
