Fuel Tank Swap

Hey everyone! I've been readin and readin through the posts for a while now. Everyone on the site is really, really helpful. I'm glad that there are so many of us enthusiasts that have come together to make this forum as good as it is.

Okay, so enough blabber. Here's what I need to know.

In reading through to get the fuel tank out from behind the seat on these classics, it seems that everyone puts a new filler in some location close to the added one that is between the rails. Is there anyway to use the original location filler but still put the tank under the bed?

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

I would guess that you could use the original filler if you wanted to bad enough. I think the issue would be that your filler hose would have to be very long and im not sure how that would affect filling the tank and also you would have to watch the gallons all the time when filling. The pump wouldnt "click" off until your whole filler hose was full as well. I just dont think its worth the trouble or the routing of the filler from front to back, but what do I know??? Everything is just an idea until someone tries it and succeeds or fails at it.

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

Another issue is the filler still being in the cab. Most move the tank to the rear of the frame to get the odor out of the cab and to keep from having a gas bomb in the passenger compartment.

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

Yeah. I see your piont(s). I'll still consider it. I just like keeping the outside look as original as possible. I've seen some slick hidden fillers that might work. I saw one that was hidden in the tail light, but that was a newer 72 I think. This wouldn't work with the '69.

I'll check with my son. He's a mechanical engineer and may offer some pointers as well. It will be a little while before I start the tank swap. To many other things going on with the little truck right now.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

If you want the "Original Look" You could have a Faux gas filler in the cab then have a hidden one behind the side marker or taillight. The filler tube from the cab to behind the rear axle, for the reasons already mentioned, is just not that practical. Just a thought, Cnut

Thanks 70Custom10Nut. I didn't think about the side marker entrance. Do you know where I can get a hidden cap like that?

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

There have been a few good ideas (w/pics) in threads on here. Check out the FAQs and Build threads, and get a line on who did them. That's about all I can give you. I personally will be using a round door unit out of an older Jeep Cherokee, on the driver's side behind the wheel well. I just like the round door and the release lever set up (a Cherokee is my daily driver). The inside will have to be custom built but it should look natural when done. Cnut

Re: Fuel Tank Swap

i would figure out a way to have a stock appearing filler yet it would be non functional and put the actual filler in the bed or behind the side marker or taillight.
