Whining noise, please help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 71 c-10, I got it on the road last September and I noticed that it makes a whining noice when going between 30 and 50 mph. Kind of like WHaaaaaaaa. when I slow down it quits making the noise. I have changed out the transmission, u-joints and carrier bearing on the drive shaft, and it still makes the noise. I took it to a rear end place and they said that they didn't think it was the rear end and they couldn't tell me what it was. I'm hoping that some of you C-10 pros might have the answer. I had that exact same problem but I came to a complete stop and made my mother-in-law get out!!!!

That is one of those things that can be hard to diagnose without riding in it. I know you need to be on a lonely road for this one but maybe get someone in the bed when you are going down the road to see if they can figure what part of the drivetrain it might be coming from.

can you tell if the sound is coming from the front/back, on a particular side? my guess is it would be the wheel bearings.

there are so many possibilites, i agree that you should try and find out exactly where to noise is on the truck. did you change your speedo cable when you changed the transmission?

As has been mentioned, the first thing you need to do is isolate it to a certain area: front, rear, middle, etc.

Does it change pitch if you let off on the gas pedal or is it pretty much constant? Rear end and other drive train noises sometimes manifest themselves as you incease speed and diminish when you let off on the pedal.

Whining noises can come from many different areas including the ones you've already checked. I have a wawawawa noise right now that is coming from one of my front tires. Been doing it for a while and I know it's a bad tire (threw a belt).

From inside the truck the noise sounds to be in the center of the truck. Thats whey the rearend guy said that he didn't think it was the rearend.
The front wheels have new bearings in them and I changed the oil in the rearend.
I didn't change the speedo cable, could that be it?
The noise changes from a low pitch to a high pitch.
I'm goint to raise the truck and have someone accelerate while I monitor the bottom of the truck. (scarry)

You can try relubing the speedo cable. On my 68 I can yank it out of the sheath... Only thing is I don't remember if I can do it from the top or the bottom or both.

As for raising the truck to run it; I've done that before but you have to make sure it's blocked and on jack stands. The other thing is that without any resistance on the tires, they will spin like crazy. Try using the brakes or even the parking brake as you give it gas to see if you can create some sort of resistance if you don't hear any whining.

Don't forget tires.I have had tires make some crazy noises and while driving things can "Ventriloquize"(is that a word or did I just invent it?) or seem like they're coming from somewhere else.
