Plastic Blank Blocks

A friend of mine purchased a small CNC machine that can cut materials that are up to 4" thick. I want to make some things for my 70 Chevy out of black plastic. Does anyone know where I can get some Black Plastic Blank Blocks? If I had more money I would do it out of Billet blanks but I would think plastic would be a lot cheaper. And I am not sure his machine could handle metal, I will have to ask him. Thanks

Re: Plastic Blank Blocks

Have you checked out your local recycling yard? The place you take all your beer & soda cans... The one where I live has all kinds of scrap material of all kinds. They have it all racked, or sorted so finding a size and shape is easy.

With the scrap mkt down so low you could pick up some chunks of alluminum, brass, or whatever looks cool pretty cheap.

As for chunks of plastic, I would almost see that as more of a pain to find. Since it would be more of a specialty material, where as brass, alluminum, or other alloys can be found pretty easy.

Good luck!

You can buy black sheets of polycarbonate thru www.mscdirect.com

It's on pg. 1802 if you have a catalog.

You could try some cabinet shops. Corain that's cut out for a sink could be laminated to that size and should mill/turn real nicely.

Re: Plastic Blank Blocks

try mcmaster-carr, and you could try EVIL BAY, search by plastic types like delrin, poly carbonate, pvc, etc.
good luck

Re: Plastic Blank Blocks

Are you going to pollish the part after it has been milled? If so, most plastic does not lend itself to pollishing. You put a buffer to it and it melts from the friction. Also what kind of flexability are you looking for? Flexable plastics generaly have lower melting temps so do not pollish, while harder plastics can be buffed carefuly, but are not verry flexable. WES

You might also try a Machine Shop supply. They usually carry some stuff for machine shops to use for soft fixtures and such.
