Re: can i take the AXLES outa a 72 and putem in my 68..

No, you can't. The axles are longer on the 5 lug rear ends, then the 6 lug one. Put the whole '72 housing in and your good to go.

BTW, the brake backing plates/shoes are the same, only the drums are different because of the lug holes. I actually bought aftermarket axles for my old '68 but had them with the 5x5 lug pattern. Then just put the 5 lug drums on and it worked perfectly.

Re: can i take the AXLES outa a 72 and putem in my 68..

Tell him that the 71-72 rear ends were wider to compensate for the increased track width of the 5 lug/disc brake front end...then tell him he is old and you wonder wht he is getting senile and forgetting easy stuff like this? Just kidding.....LOL

Blue truck, that would be 3.07 or 3.73. Red trucks got the lower ratios. Corvette optioned trucks got the lowest gearing.

Nope... that's because you are drinking more beer then eating food. Too much beer makes you wider in the front, too much food makes you wider in the rear.

Re: can i take the AXLES outa a 72 and putem in my 68..

3.07 is standard in an automatic/V8 C/10 truck (assuming the V8 part since details weren't given)
the rears got wider in mid 70.
If you install the wide axle shafts, then the drums will be pushed too far out and only be in 1/2 contact with the shoes, plus your bearings won't be rolling on the correct hardened surface on the shaft.
The shafts are 3/8 inch longer on each side.

Re: can i take the AXLES outa a 72 and putem in my 68..

I put 71 axles in my 68 and they worked fine. After reading on hear about the size difference I just took my old axles to the wrecking yard with me and stood them side by side with the 71 axles and they were the same. They are on and fit just fine. Maybe I just got lucky, I don't know.

Re: can i take the AXLES outa a 72 and putem in my 68..

tycoon, was your rear ever swapped out for a 70 model year for better gearing maybe?
There is no way a 68 and a 5 lug should be the same. This has been documented on here and in the hollanders books as fact, that mid model year 70 was when the new wide rear end went in.

I got lucky on the 68 50th I'm building. It had already been converted to 5 lug in the front, but it was 6 lug in the rear. Someone must have swapped rears at one time or another and it turned out to be from a 70. I was able to swap the axles and big drum brakes from a 71 BB parts truck I bought to complete my 5 lug conversion, .

So would a 72 leaf spring axle bolt right up into a 69 leaf spring axle?

you mean would a 72 rear end bolt into a 69 truck?
Yes. Might be a couple small issues, like brake hoses, or hard lines not being exactly the same.... i'm not sure. But the main part... the rear end... will bolt up.

If you go to the trouble of swaping rear ends you might as well look for 5 lug, then you don't have to fool with it anymore...IMHO
