How to spot a good trans
I'm still looking for an automatic. I see a lot of th400's that are out of vehicles. Obviously one can't see how they shift. Is there some things I should ask or look for? Here is one in particluar.
http://louisville.craigslist.org/pts/1214272712.html I also ran across a local 66 that has factory air, 327 and automatic. I might look at it. Pics don't look like much and it is more than i want to spend, but might be worth taking a peek. http://evansville.craigslist.org/cto/1258385945.html

Re: How to spot a good trans
pull the dip stick and see if the oil is burnt or not. It will acually smell like burnt toast. If there is no oil then you will have to pull the pan and see if there is alot of clutch material on the bottom of it and also smell the tranny.

Re: How to spot a good trans
I have identified a TH350 from someone I trust when they say it is freshly rebuilt. If I use that, would I need to switch crossmembers when going from a three on the tree in a 66 C10?

Re: How to spot a good trans
Yes you will have to switch crossmembers with either trans you use. You can use the crossmember that holds the parking break lines on it. Make you a tab off of it and brace is. Thats what I had done on mine. It works fine and didn't flex. You will have to move that crossmember though for it to fit the correct spot. Just 4 holes to drill! Also many diffrent companys sell a transmission crossmember for it!
