Gathering parts and have a few Questions....
I am in the process of gathering all the neccessary parts to make my 69 a daily driver. I purchased a new oil pan, new fuel pump, pads and shoes, and a real seal for the 3spd trans. My first question is the truck needs a new radiator, it currently has a 3 row radiator and I would like to put in a 4. Will this require new brackets to hold the radiator in? If so, were can I find them?
The second question is, I would like to install an electric fan. What brands have people had good luck with and what is the best way to a temp switch? Also, I plan a putting A/C in the truck, does this mean I need to use a dual fan setup? Thank you for any help you can provide |

Not sure about the brackets but, Why not keep the 3 row core, put a fan/shroud on it and be done?
I run a 3 row with electric fan (12in) and its barely enough airflow on a hot day and being run hard (no a/c). If your stuck on running elec fans, get 2 12in fans and stay with the 3 row. Just took a look in LMC and noticed that the actual metal brackets are the same but the rubber insert is different. I'm sure you could cut your one out to match the 4 row.

Thanks for the info., I'm wanting to use the electric fans just in case I get caught in Atlanta traffic. I don't want the truck to overheat everytime it hits some traffic. Anyway, I was wondering, don't you have to have a 4 row radiator if you have A/C? I'm going top add A/C in a month or so and want to make sure tha Radiator I buy will handle it.

Hey guys....the 4-core radiators do require
bigger brackets...The tanks (outside part of the radiator) measure 2-3/4" inches on a 3-core radiator and jump to 3-1/2 on a 4-core. Installing a 4-core will require new upper & lower mounts, and all new pads. GMCPauls sells them if you need a vendor....Just note: Installing the bigger lower radiator mount, you will need to make a notch in the core support to allow the mount to extend out slightly. (according to GMCPaul, this is the way the factory did this) Also, I ordered some standard radiator mounts from him which did NOT fit the radiator....had an inner opening of only 2-1/2", too small to fit. If it were me, I would keep the 3-core, but take a look at USRadiator.com , they sell a high efficency rad, and and ultra high effeciency one....and can ship direct to you. We just put a 4-core in another truck, radiator purchased from 1-800-Radiator and the 4-core mounts/rubbers from GMCPauls, it fit (ok), but had trouble with SBC shround not really matching up well. Hey Atl69C10, You might want to come to Marrietta Ga. to the Auto fair on the 25th and meet some of the members.There may even be enough of us with trucks there to be able to look and measure.Maybe someone will have done this and you can actually look at what they had to modify.

I'm running a 4 row radiator with an A/C condensor and trans cooler in front of it.... using a Flex-a-lite Black Magic electric fan that I got from summit... it's a single 15 inch unit that comes with its own shroud and temp sensor... truck runs cool in stop n go traffic with A/C running.

come on guys i thought that there was

I am in the process of switching from a 3 core to a 4 core. The upper and lower brackets do need to be changed. The 4 core is wider and will not sit down into the 3 core mounts and the upper brackets will not span the top of the 3 core tank. I just purchased the lower brackets and 4 new rubber inserts (I had the top brackets). The old brackets are riveted to the core support so the rivets will need to be ground off and replaced with a bolt system in the new 4 core brackets. All this being said, I am changing because I am pulling ny 350 and installing a very muscular 402. My 3 core worked great with the 350. Never had a problem with it. I don't think you will gain anything by switching to a 4 core if you are running a SB. Good luck
