Buddy wants a truck

My room mate at school is looking to buy a 68 stepside. 327 4 speed. He says there is some rust on it (but every truck has some rust.)

My question is what should i tell him to really look at to determine if it is worth getting or just a junker. the owner wants about $2,800

i have already told him a few things but more is appreciated

Re: Buddy wants a truck

I beg to differ. My truck has no rust... (arrogant SOB, aren't I?)

I'm sure you know the usual stuff:

Is it smoking upon cold start up?
Does it run? Run well?
How are the synchro's in the tranny?
How's the clutch feel?
Any play in the steering?
And most importantly of all, does it have the "naked girl" mudflaps?!?!

In addition I'd check the cab thoroughly for rust as well as the frame. Rockers, cab corners, around the windshield, drip rail, floor, kick panels, cab mounts. Some rust is easier to repair then other rust.

Re: Buddy wants a truck

WAJ.... for about a grand (give or take) you can have something shipped from out west.
For 1800, you can get twice the truck you'd get here in the rust belt.
Tell your friend to look on craigslist LA or san fran or anywhere in arizona.
With 3 grand in his pocket, there is no reason to buy mid west junk.
