Re: head unit?
its what creates the sound for every thing else... so yeah it's kind of an important piece.
i've been looking around for one to finish my build up.. it's looking to be a pioneer deh-5100.. i picked that one mostly because i'm on a budget. it has three pre-outs, and pioneer decks don't skip... it's around 200 bucks, but they do have cheaper ones.

Re: head unit?
Agreed! Money spent on the head unit is well worth it. Dual makes alot of low priced head units, but they really aren't worth your money. Stick with Pioneer, JVC, and Kenwood. I prefer JVC

Re: head unit?
The deck may be the single most important part of the system. It provides the signal to everything else. On these, I don't cheap out and usually reach high on the shelf.
The Pioneer 4100 ist he lowest in the chain that I would go, mostly because (what I am told) is that the 3100 and lower aren't even made by Pioneer. They are outsourced.
