Purchasing advice - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys, I wanted to just start a quick thread in here for some help. My boss has a 86 Chevy Scottsdale (305/auto/2wd) Its actully in really good shape, a few cosmetic issues, dash is cracked up, and the only piece of rust I can find is on the bottom wheel well there is about 2 bubbles I can prob grind off and fix. Its 2 owner and he knows the orig. owner. And its a reg cab short bed.

something I dont understand, the tag says the truck was assembled in 10/85 in Canada. I thought they didnt put tbi on till 87? This truck has TBI.

How hard is it to take all the TBI stuff OFF and put a carb on? I want to swap in a built 454, drop it, paint it, and play with it some. I will leave the motor in it alone until i either did a 350 or 454 but its not hard to swap to CArb is it?

It seems like a pretty good deal, if it's what you are wanting.

Yeah I will snap some pics of it if I can. It is what Im wanting, but how hard is it to get rid of the TBI? Is 3k a average deal, decent, good, great.

Oh and the only thing i can think of is the tranny whines in gear, but if your coasting and you throw it in N the noise is gone.

To me it sounds like an ok deal. Without pics it's somewhat hard to tell. I don't think it's a steal of a deal, but it sounds like a good solid purchase. I don't know what all would be involved in removing the tbi, but it would be pretty easy to do. Especially if you are swapping motors anyway.

Ok well I'll try to get some pictures of it if I can as soon as I can. Im leaving tommorow for vacation so I wont be back till monday and Ill snap some then. But other than that, does it seem like a good deal?

Ok Ill get pics, but I think im gonna try to look around for something better. Thats what I want but i really want carb and a 350. I cant buy yet, ive gotta wait for this guy to buy my other truck so i have money!

changing to carb is not hard at all, two ways to go about it, you can disconnect the fuel pump fuse and relay and pull throught the stock pumps with a mechanical pump on the block, or you can keep the in tank pumps and put a fuel pressure regulator, on one of mine i left the electronic distributor and coil, and on my other i put an HEI, both work fine, one of my trucks is done with a regulator, other has mechanical pump and pulls through stock pump, both also work great,

That's how it's always worked. Generally anything manufactured in or after August (or is it September)of a given year is marketed as the next years model.

Manufactured in Sept 2009, it's a 2010 model.

Anymore it seems they are getting earlier and earlier! Seems like early in the year they are already talking about the next years vehicles.
