Re: Speed warning dash

My GMC dump truck has a speed warning dash, but it has a 2 piece speedometer cable with a sensor in between them.

I don't think a speed warning/ vacuum dash came in the smaller trucks, but I could be wrong.

Re: Speed warning dash

Kevin in the top corner near headlight hole in dash is a dimple/ location dot for the speed warning knob cable. Drill a 3/8 hole and the cable will slide through this. There is a reproduction wiring harness available for $20 or less that works as original. Radio shack sell as buzzer that will work as well - look in the "buzzer" section you ma have to adapt a little (2 spade terminals on the buzzer) but buzzer has holes to mount as original. Hope this helps -Harold- If you need to see location hole please let me know and I can email you a picture.

Re: Speed warning dash

Ok, so for a speed warning novice, how does this thing work? And at what speed does it become a wife... I mean, tell you you're going too fast?

Re: Speed warning dash

the speed warning was more of a speed alert, a primitive cruise control so to speak.

there is a secondary needle that is located behind the speedometer needle that can be adjusted by a knob located to the upper left of the speedometer, this is the speed warning needle. there is a very small contact attached speed warning needle. when the speedometer needle touches the s.w. contact, it creates a circuit that activates a buzzer that is attached to the firewall.

interesting and rare device.

Thanks for the info. I'll give you that it's interesting, but it sounds like the LAST thing I would ever want on a vehicle! Unless of course you set it at like 100 MPH.

Re: Speed warning dash

Nick just from what I see it looks lik you have a pretty cool truck! Speed alert and overdrive. Is the overdrive still operational? There are not many of the overdrives still around, so we need more pictures

Re: Speed warning dash

The overdrive didnt work when I bought it, the PO didnt know anything about it. went to the chevy dealer in town and was told it was never available from chevy and it was a aftermarket thing. After a few hours with a test light and a trip to the parts store ( they knew nothing either ) I found a 15 dollar solenoid that looked right and should work. took her down the road in OD. works great!

and to keep this post about the thread....... does adding a speed warning dash to a tach dash means you have to cut the tins?

Re: Speed warning dash

You can buy a new inner tach tin from GMC Pauls for around $50, but you will have to cut the outer tin for the tach to fit through or drill a tach back tin for the speed alert cable to go through and the ground to connect to.

Re: Speed warning dash

Does anyone have a picture of where the buzzer mounts? I have a speedminder but am not sure of the correct buzzer mounting location. I got my buzzer at a O'Riellys parts store and also had to use the spade terminals. The original harness would not mate up to it.
