Need HELP quick please!!!!!!!
I am in the middle of rebuilding the door hinges on Fred, and I am not sure how to put the steel bushings in.
I have the door hanging on the door jack and and ran into something that has me confused....... (it's OK, it's easy to do).... Please look at this first pic and see if I have the bronze bushings in correctly: Now, I am not sure how the steel bushings go in. It looks as though either way they go in, they will need ground down flush with the hinge. True? If so, looking at the upper hole on the hinge, do they go in like this: Or do they go like this: Help please!!!!

im not 100% sure but i would think that being you have to beat the pin downward if put the lip towards the top so as you install the pin it dont push the bushing out

The bottom one? That's the way they came out. It would be trapped between the two hinge pieces. Plus the lip would act like a bearing between the two pieces. At least that's the way I thought it should go....

In your application on the 85 looks different than what we have on the 67-72. As in our case it was real obvious what direction the bushings went. But from looking at your application, I think it would be correct in pic 2. Because you don't have enough room or space between the hinges without creating binding, right?

Yep. That was my thought too, then carefully taking the steel bushing down until it was flush with the hinge piece. I just wanted some other opinions before I go and do it.

Well, I got them done, but it didn't really do anything. I mean, the door is tight now, but it still hangs in the same spot it did before. And it appears the only way to get to the upper hinge to adjust it is to pull the fender, and pull the dash bezel.
So I guess I'll just deal with it until this winter when I do the engine swap, then I'll just put all new hinges on it. Grrrrrrrrrrrr...............

Where is the door hanging? The doors on these trucks have a nice habit of cracking around the hinges. Make sure that is not the case. Also, you need to replace the plastic bushing on the striker bolt to make it shut right, too.
I don't remember there being a steel bushing? Is the door section of your hinge wallowed out from the pin moving? The bushing that you are showing as a "Steel" bushing just looks like an oversized bushing. If the smooth (smaller) bushing just slipped into place, you need to drill the hole out, and press the larger (with the serrated edge) bushing into place. The bushings are installed on the body side of the hinge. Use a bolt the same diameter as the pin with a flat washer on each side to press them in (it will go in as you tighten the nut- that's the easiest way I have found to get them in). Install the pins from the top, so they won't be prone to walk out. If the doors still drag, a door alignment tool (it looks like a bar that rests on the striker, with another striker on the bar to catch the door latch) can be used to bend the door slightly to make it align. If the slop is eliminated in the hinge and striker, it should stay put, provided the door is not cracked out at the hinge. Last edited by Jonboy; 07-16-2009 at 08:20 AM. |

There is no cracks, I did look for that. Both the body side and door side holes were worn, so I put the bronze bushings in the body side, and drilled the door side and pressed in the steel bushings. Everything went together OK, and everything is nice and tight, but the back end of the door still hangs low and rides up on the nader pin.
I briefly thought about trying to tweak up the back of the door by using the floor jack with a 2x6 or 2x8 on it to lift the back of the door, but decided against it. I might try to find a door alignment tool. A buddy of mine runs a body shop, I might call him.

With that bar, it only takes a couple of minutes. Also, inspect the area around the striker (and under the washers) for cracks.

did you buy the bushings as a kit? if so, it is very possible they sent you an oversized replacement because over time if left to its own, lol, it'll wear it out.. I don't recall there being that many bushings in the kit when I replaced the ones on my 85 I restored a few years ago.. but, that has been 10 yrs ago lol
