True or false?

With half a tank of gas when I pull the fuel line off the tank under the cab all my gas should run out?

Re: True or false?

Just about. That's how I drained mine when I was trying to get the crud out and it pretty much drained it all.

Re: True or false?

I understand your question, But what will cause it to drain? The sending unit is mounted at top, right? I guess if the lines are full then the aspiration effect would cause it to drain. I had a similiar problem. I spihoned out the 20 gallons of gas. I KNOW! its not the smartest thing to do, However they do sell a kit to do it safely. I would check the tank for rust and debris and have it cleaned and sealed or do it yourself. It cost me about 80 bucks to get someone to do for me. It would be just another thing you know if fixed and will not cause you a problem later.
Just my two cents.

Re: True or false?

Have you taken the sending unit out?

Your tank could be rusty and full of debri on the inside.

Re: True or false?

yeah as i started pulling the tank I realized that it in fact should NOT drain cause the sending unit is on top. However I decided to pull it anyway cause my fuel filters last about a week and fuel pumps about 3 weeks....

Here's a silly question.... When I drain all this gas out of the tank should it be a DARK orange/red? lol i'm thinking it's a little rusty in there. Almost looks like dyed diesel

Mine looked like a very strong sweet tea or a light coffee color, once you pour it all out i would wash it out with the hose. I have heard of people putting several different types of home remedies. But drop a few bucks and get it sealed and forget it. Fuel pump and new rubber lines under 100 bucks.

Re: True or false?

that would be a great idea, depends on whatca doin with the truck, there are numerous threads on here on how to do and what tanks work best. You just need to do a search.

Re: True or false?

Y'all goining to make me go look tomorrow. I thought I saw a fuel line at the bottom of my 69 c-10 swb tank on the passenger side attached to the fuel line going to the motor. Why would it not gravity feed out of the tank. Is there really a fuel line in the sender?

Re: True or false?

on mine the fuel line goes up through the floor and connects to a rubber hose that connects to the sending unit with has a zinc coated alumn. line which goes down to the bottom of the tank and has a mesh "sock" at the end. The sock is your first defense against contaminats. Mine was completely gone when i removed it a few weeks ago.

Re: True or false?

The fuel stays primed to the pump. So,it will run out when you free the line from the pump.

Yup.
Now my stupid questions are: gas cap on, or gas cap off? If the gas cap is on, is it a vented cap?
If air can't get into the tank, fuel can't get out.

Re: True or false?

Fuel will definitely siphon out. Found out the hard way. PO had mufflers under the cab. Cooked the rubber fuel line. '69 with a vented cap.

yup I thought about that too. So with the lines pulled off I took the cap off and still nothing came out.. I'm going to be taking the sending unit out today to see what I can find.

Anybody need 10 gallons of Dark orange gas?

Re: True or false?

That sounds like the inside of the tank on my 71 after it sat for about 10 years with gas in it. If you have a tank relocation in the plans, I'd say that now is the time to do it.

Otherwise, in the past I have flushed out tanks with a steam cleaner or high pressure washer with some success. One of the problems with these trucks is that if they happened to sit out for a while the gas caps tend to disappear and all kinds of crud tends to collect in them.

Re: True or false?

I took the sending unit out and it is very rusty and the sock is deteriorated through. However the bottom of the tank was very clear of debris. How are these tanks supposed to look inside? I dont see how one could not have this surface rust in it??
