Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
Hey guys! I had wanted to make the 1.5 hr drive to Canton for their big cruise in tonight but my wife was out of town and I was having trouble finding anyone to ride shotgun with me. I had about decided to head out and make it a solo trip when one of my buds asked me to come by a small cruise-in here in Lafayette. We chatted a few minutes and actually talked about loading up in my wifes 54 and making the drive on down to Canton. I also checked out a few rides while we were still in Lafayette.
I've been seeing this truck at cruise-ins in the area for years ( I think I actually posted a shot of it in last weeks pics as well) but tonight was the first time I ever got to talk to the owner. Turns out that he bought it new in 1972. It's a factory V8 Automatic, factory a/c and tach. It's been repainted it's original medium blue for about 15 yrs and is holding up nicely. It's got about 130K actual miles. He said that he had two kids, so anytime the family went somewhere they drove whatever other vehicle they might have owned at the time. This super clean and freshly built looking Nova rolled in. Looked serious to me. We were about ready to roll on down to Canton when another bud rolled up in this Chevy II. It's a 40K actual mile car! Probably the most solid and well documented car I've seen in a while. It came with every piece of paperwork that had ever been written up for tha car detailing it's history. Well, the Novas owner wanted to ride over the mountain to Trenton for it's cruise-in so we all loaded up in my wifes 54 and away we went. Trenton is another small north georgia town. Their cruise wasn't very large but it was close to home and the setting was very nice. I just shot a couple of pics while we were there. A bumpside Ford for Andy! |

Thanks for sharing, as always good quality photos. I wish I had the understanding of my camera to take pics like you do.

Re: Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
Well, I had typed out a good three or four paragraphs going in to great detail about the "painful experience" I hinted about in the title of this thread.
I was just about ready to hit "submit" when my computer had a brain fart and conked out on me!! So, now it's late and I'm tired and I'm giving you the short version of the story. My brother learned that this... Can get you a ride in an ambulance and about 3.5 days in ICU with an IV stuck in you while being heavily medicated. Afterwards, if you were really lucky, where it struck you might look like this... Seriously, He was very lucky. The snake was a copperhead and only got him with one fang and scratched him with another. He stayed calm and administered first-aid to himself while waiting on the ambulance and photographed the snake with his phone so that it could be identified by the doctors so his treatment could be planned. |

How big was the copperhead? They are nasty little snakes and are camoflaged soo well it is hard just glancing to pick it up in the picture. Glad your brother is ok could have been much worse.

Great pics, nice to see a one owner truck that has been kept in that great of condition. I have to agree with Andy on the Ford, I've got a soft spot for them, Dad bought a skyblue 68 Ranger new, right around the time I was born, it's long gone. Sorry about your brother, but glad he kept his head and the phone pic was really good thinking!

Nice truck. My chickens make short work outa them copper heads. They go crazy chacen each other around seeing whose going to get to eat it. My dogs been bit twice by them. Just put on AB's and heat pads. His head swelled up so big he couldn't even lift it. I learned not to rake leaves in flip flops myself when one crawled out of the pile I just raked up and across my bare foot. No bites though. Hope his big toe stayed on. Nice cruise pic's too.

Re: Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
I was out spraying my fence line about a month ago.
My 6 year old daughter always insists on tagging along no matter where I go. While spraying she asked "What do we do about the snake?" I then said "Sophie, don't even joke about a snake." She then said "What about I'm not joking!!" I shot this guy with the 22. I am glad she came along as I just about to step right in his vicinity. Ugly copperhead about 2 feet long. AJ |

I don't like snakes either. That's why I carry these with me when I go anywhere there might be some. BTW Asa, some nice shots again. I'm really diggin the gold Nova. Kudo's to your brother for keeping his cool in that situation. I might just have to get him a Klondike Bar.

Kool pics, great way to spend a summer evening. Your brother got real lucky/trying to stay calm is the hard part. Here is a picture of a Eastern Diamond back that was lurking outside my fence on federal property. Finally had enough of the rattling and called the snake catcher. Snagged it with a dog pole, strangled it out, it measured right at 6'. I've seen bigger Eastern Diamond in pictures, but nothing like being live in front of you...

Re: Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
A few weeks back, I was coiling up a garden hose so I could mow the yard, when a 3 foot long section of my hose fell off about 2 feet from me. Only the section was brown not yellow.....I turned to grab a cinderblock to do it in and by the time I turned back around it was gone.
That was mama copperhead, I killed two of her young in my shop two days before that, the little ones are the most dangerous... Between copperheads, cottonmouth, brown recluse, and the black widows, I'm a little nervous about my dimly lit open doored shop sometimes.

They sell a product called Snake Away I think that you can put in your shop and around your yard. Also try moth balls around the shop.

Re: Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
Copperheads up here in the hills tend to be short - a big old one may be only 24 - 30 inches long, but they are way-bigger-diameter than yours are in the photos - I've seen them as big around as a big can of peaches ......... maybe 6 - 8 inch diameter.
Almost stepped on a big one like that once, but I didn't ------ I think I may have drowned him. Last edited by 68shortstep; 07-20-2009 at 06:36 PM. |

JesseSimon, ain't Arkansas grand. Don't forget those giant torantulas and the scorpians, althought they aren't very poisonous, you still hate to see them crawllin toward you when your on your back on the creeper. Like I said though, get some chickens, they clean out them copperheads quick. You do tend to draw in the big 5 to 6 foot rat snakes though that eat their eggs.

Re: Saturday pics (7-18) Two cruise-ins and a painful experience!
Haha, dude I'm tellin you! Over the 4th we went on the Illinois river to relax, I went to climb on a rock and there was a tarantula catchin some rays! He was kinda small, bout the size of a tin can lid but I almost put my hand right on him! Having been in South Texas as a kid, the scorpions here are kinda laughable but when you don't expect one they make you jump.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a Chicken around here.....but if they are gonna draw the rat snakes I dunno....I killed one of those that was nearly seven feet long about 5 years ago, took three slugs from a .22 rifle to put it down. At the time I didn't know he was harmless otherwise I would have let him slide on... I'm gonna try moth balls for my pest problem, everyone keeps telling me to use them so I'll give it a shot...
