Transmission Temp Probe??

Looking to buy an aluminum trans pan for my TH400, can I mount the transmission temp probe in the drain plug hole? Or should the temp probe be mounted in line?

I plan on buying a AutoMeter Guage

Thanks

Re: Transmission Temp Probe??

I have a th350. I took a pipe plug out of the case just above the pan and stuck the sensor in there. Not a perfect solution but it works for me.

Re: Transmission Temp Probe??

I would be concerned about it getting knocked out or pulling out somehow and all my fluid draining out. Also, to drain the pan, you have to remove the probe, which might weaken the probe and its associated wiring every time you remove it. Just a thought.

Re: Transmission Temp Probe??

Wonder if the TH400 has a plug in the side of the housing that the probe can go into???

Re: Transmission Temp Probe??

I would try to find the pressure test port (should be an 1/8" NPT) for the trans temp, the drain plug would probably work, but I would be concerned as stated above. Also Im not sure of the accuracy of the temp in the bottom of the pan, seems it would be cooler than the rest of the trans to me. You can also weld a bung into the side of the pan, just make sure the probe doesnt "bottom out" on the internals of trans or it will just be maxed out all the time. Autometer sells a specific "short" sender for this purpose. Good luck with your quest.

Re: Transmission Temp Probe??

On my th350 I bought a fitting that would accept the temp probe end and welded it to the side of the pan, (after drilling a hole of course) I bought an Auto meter trans temp gauge to match my other gauges. A regular temp gauge will work as well. Same thing anyway. Find an aluminum fitting and have it welded to your pan. I bought my fitting from a place that services pumps. (air pumps/compressors, gas pumps, well pumps, etc.)
