Frame Cleaning Solution found!!!!

Greetings Gearhead Collegues...
While tearing down my baby I was dreading the ineviatble frame cleaning and detailing. I read a couple of threads about oven cleaner from the dollar store. I was in extreme doubt about using this on my frame and the power it would have aginst 40 years worth of grease oil, grime, salt, etc, etc.

This stuff works wonders!!! I had a very thick build up of "funk" all over the frame from leaks from everywhere literally. I caoted the entire frame with the oven cleaner..(3 cans) and let it sit and work for 1 1/2 hours. I fired up my pressure washer and actually sprayed the frame clean!!! I was in awe at the power of the oven cleaner. Now I'm down to business on blasting my frame and finishing it off by primer and paint.

All of that cost me $3.00 and a little water. I figure some guys projects might be at the same status as mine and looking for a cheap frame cleaning solution and wanted to pass along for what it's worth.

Keep the projects going..

Definitely true words of wisdom. Outside breeze will easily carry this stuff. If it gets in your eyes or on your skin, you'll be very uncomfortable for several minutes @ the minimum.

That's a fact. It's not too easy on paint jobs either.

Re: Frame Cleaning Solution found!!!!

Hi Gents,
I took a couple of after pics when I used the oven cleaner. I didn't have the forethought to take any before pics but, believe me, it was absolutely funkified with grease, grime, and nastiness. The oven cleaner is from the Dollar Store and is nothing short of amazing. 1 application did the trick (3 cans) did the entire frame. Followed by a pressure washer and presto, ready to blast, prime and paint.

Thanks,
Mark Ingle

Re: Frame Cleaning Solution found!!!!

Yes, this stuff works wonders. I recently used it on my latest project thinking it could never work and it did better that anything else I've tried. And gloves are an absolute MUST to use. My finger tips especially around my nails were soooo chemical burnt it was rediculous. I always have to learn the hard way it seems.

I'd do a search for one. It seems like somebody posts one up in the paint and body section on a monthly basis. Also, there is a nozzle that you can put on a pressure washer that basically acts as a jet-pump and you can use it to sand-blast just about anything. The only down-side to it is wasted sand...but sand is relatively cheap.

Hi highschoolbuilder, I was going to buy a sandblaster and learn this myself but, when I looked into te cost of the blaster, sand, and making a huge mess to clean up afterward. I called some shops and found that they would actually blast and prime the frame for a third of what I would spend doing myself. No brainer right??

Food for thought....good luck on your project.

Just to give you an idea, to blast my frame he was going to charge between $150 and $200. That was the best deal I found. Most shops was going to charge between $80 and $90 per hour. I like the flat rate better, no surprises at time to pay you know.

Re: Frame Cleaning Solution found!!!!

okay. sounds good. can they just paint it with a black gloss after the prime. and if so will it be that much more expensive? and can they do just the back of the frame. i know it sounds weird but im doing a daily driver build and i took off the bed to replace the bed and im just doing that part right now.
