Re: Oil Pan Removal

I didn't...just unbolted my motor mounts and picked the motor up a little. getting it out was the easy part. Back in really sucked.

Re: Oil Pan Removal

If you have to lift the engine a little to slip the pan out, be sure to use a flat wooden board between your jack and the pan so you don't dent it and then unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine. Check to be sure the HEI does not hit the firewall. Removing just the cap might give you enough clearance. Place 2x4 wooden blocks between the engine mounts and the frame brackets and lower the engine back down. Make sure the oil pump pick up is clean inside and has not wiggled itself loose. May want to make sure oil pump is not worn out while you have the pan off. Use a one piece rubber oil pan seal when you put it back on.

Re: Oil Pan Removal

Also rotate the crank so timing mark is 180° out, this should give maximum clearance of the counterweights.

Re: Oil Pan Removal

I also loosened the mounts a little and jacked the motor up. I have always had trouble clearing the flywheel without jacking the motor up. I have an HEI as well, but there's never been a clearance issue there...the fan shroud did have to come off, though. Good luck with it...it's one of my least favorite things to do on my truck. BTW, I second the one piece Felpro gasket suggestion.
