The guy I got my truck from many years ago referred to it as a "heavy half-ton" The option sheet indeed lists it as having a heavy duty spring. Is this common? Rare? It is a half-ton with 6 lug wheels and coils at all four corners.

I have not seen this option before but I assume it is merely a higher rate coil spring maybe closer to a 3/4 ton spring rate.

Is it a helper spring? I have seen some that look like a half of a leaf that clamps onto the frame behind the axle?

I have seen the helper spring but I think the option sheet (SPID) lists it as "G60 auxiliary rear springs". The G50 option, as in this case, is just a heavier rate coil spring.

I'll have to look at my 67 Panel's option sheet. I think it listed heavy rear springs, and it had the "helper" spring attached to the frame, which would rest on the top of the axle under a load.

i have a 67 with this same option..
like urz, this one had few options.
these springs make the rear higher than normal

mclairmo is right. G50 heavy rear spring is just a higher rate coil spring. My panel had the G60 "auxilliary rear springs" option, which was the helper leaves. My bad.

The rear coil springs on my '71 lwb stepper has the heavy duty option and no helper leaf springs.

It came with a 350 and compound 4 speed.

it is a 3/4 ton spring from the factory.
Does not make it a 3/4 ton truck though, still a lame rear end.
the PO was wrong on calling it a heavy half. That was an option package in the late 70's.
