Another Noob question. Transmission shifting

Ok, I know its weird.

I swear I can not feel my transmission shifting. I believe it is the stock tranny, is this normal, I am considering adding a tach, any thoughts?

Do you mean it shifts smoothly or doesn't shift at all? If #1, drain the pan and add some type-f transmission fluid from any auto parts store. I did a couple days ago and it REALLY shifts now

What trans? Powerglide, th350, th400? Like I said before, if you really want to feel the shift (again guessing you are talking about soft shifts, not a non-shifting tranny), go to the auto parts store and get 3qts (if you have a th350 like me) of Type-F transmission fluid and a pan gasket. Dump the pan, seal it back up, put the new in. Like a shift kit in a bottle.

If your fear is that it isn't shifting, try manually shifting as you accelerate. You should feel something... If you don't, time to get a nice 700R4 with a shift kit that'll bark the tires at half throttle!! (Hey, I think big, it's what I do!).

Re: Another Noob question. Transmission shifting

I would think that if it is stuck in 1st or some other gear, you would be able to clearly tell. Either your engine will be revving at 5000 rpms on the freeway (if stuck in 1st gear) or you will have no accelaration (if stuck in 2nd or 3rd). You should also be able to hear the engine drop its revs at each shift. Open the window and listen while accelerating. Stock transmissons are not supposed to be hard shifting. Buyers of these trucks, when they were new, would probably complain. I think the goal of GM was to make the trans shift as smoothly and quietly as possible. The problem is that this smoothness creates wear every time the trans shifts (due to built in slippage). I have a shift kit in my street/strip TH400 and it shifts pretty hard but I like it. Hard shifting means less slippage which is better for trans life.
