Frame question

I am doing a 4x4 conversion on my 69. It had coils in the rear. My question is are the frames the same on a 2wd whether it is a coil or leaf truck (meaning do the both have the bump out over the axle)? If this is the case I should be able to use the stock spring hangers off of a 2wd leaf truck instead of making my own. thanks

Re: Frame question

you can use leaf hangers off a 2wd on your coil frame BUT if you are going to use a rear diff from a 67-72 4wd truck, you will have to move the spring pads on the axle housing. a 73 up diff will be a direct bolt in except for one shock mount.

Re: Frame question

I recently saw a converted truck where the guy used the 73 up spring hangers and shackle mounts and it looked pretty good, although he had them bolted on a little bit too far downward for my tastes.

Keep us up to date on your conversion, as I am kind of interested in something similar for my 72.

I am converting a 71 Chevy w/coils tp 4wd also, I have been looking for aftermarket brackets for awhile now, I gave up and found a board member that had a 2wd GMC with leafs that was willing to sell just the brackets off of, these should be a direct bolt on after some centering and hole drilling. Then you should be able to use any 52 inch leafs as long as they are the right width.

Re: Frame question

just hit pick-n-pull and cut them off a 73 on up truck so you can get a better choice of rear leaf springs. if i remember correctly, 67-72 chevy/gmc 2wd's only had 2" wide leaf springs where the 4x4s had 2 1/2" as did all 73 on up. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Re: Frame question

Mine was a leaf truck, it had the coil bump outs as well. It had 2 1/2 " leafs but I converted to Super duty ford rear leafs and stock ford front hangers. I had ford rear hangers but I later made my one so I could do a shakle flip. The ford hangers had the same offset as the chevys so I did not have to relocate my spring pads.

Re: Frame question

I have a set of hangers off of an 83 but there is a problem with using them. on those trucks the frame is straight where the front hanger mounts(like the 67-72 4x4's). Since the 2wd leaf trucks have the same frame as the coil trucks I figured they would mount right up to the frame since they bolt on where the frame is starting to bump. Skchevota did you modify the ford front mounts to fit the frame? Would you happen to have any pictures of the front hanger.

thanks
