NP203 Question

Ok, so I hate to be "that guy" who asks all the obvious questions about 4 wheel drives, but i'm to the point in my build where I want to make sure that I have all the correct parts for my truck. I'm pretty sure that the NP203 did not come in a 67-72 truck? Am I right? And I know that originally they were a full time 4wd transfer case right? Ok, so here's my problem. I'm researching trying to figure out what transfer case I have and after looking at many pictures of various cases I decide that I have a NP203(22 inches from front of case to rear). But I read that there is a part time upgrade that is available for these to make them work like a NP205. So i'm working the levers on the side of the case and one lever has three positions, one locks the front and rear together, one is neutral, and one seems to just power the rear? The other lever has 2 positions which i'm assuming is High/Low? So does it seem to you all that I have a transfer case that has been modified to part time 4wd? Thanks!

Re: NP203 Question

Does your front axle have hubs to lock or unlock? If so then it most likley has a part time conversion kit in it. If you put the hubs in the free position and the t-case in hi range (not hi-loc) and the truck still moves then it has been converted.

Re: NP203 Question

Here is a good article on how to convert a 203 with a few pics that could help you tell if you have a np203 or not. http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/howto/47538/index.html

Re: NP203 Question

Yeah, it has lockout hubs, but this transfer case didnt come with this truck frame. I did some trading for it back when I first started the process. All I know is that I thought the NP203 was full time, and mine has a selection where the front output does not turn but the back does?

Re: NP203 Question

i had a 203 with a part time kit in my 70.
on my levers it had high lock, high, neutral, low, and low lock, and the other was for 2wd and 4wd.

me being the college edu-macated idiot that i am, gave the 203 to a buddy that was going to use the case in a doubler when i swapped trans. but i did get the shifter assembly off it

Re: NP203 Question

Gene, I would sell it and get you a 205. They are fairly easy to come by still, and I bet you could pick one up for a couple bones. Trevor

Re: NP203 Question

Wanna buy a NP203 Trevor?

Here's my case, I didnt see a model number or a tag above the front output shaft? Just a number stamped on the flat part above it (K8M08)??
