Don't replace your carpet!
Just wanted to say thanks to Tim Christian for some new carpet for my truck. There's only one problem. The carpet looked to nice for my beater. Well, I had to take the seat out to get the carpet in. After looking at it a little, the carpet was to clean for my truck. So....I decided to repaint the dash. After thinking about that, I decided it would be better to take off the glove box door and paint it seperate. Then the gauge cluster. Well, if I'm going to do the dash, might as well paint the rest of the inside...right? O.k., the gas tank is coming out. No, the doors have to come off also to get in the door jambs. Wait, the fenders and hood need to come off also. I can do this, right? Son of a b*&^%! The bed has to come off to paint the back of the cab and the outside! What have I got myself into? Well, looks like my 'patina' is no longer 'patina'. Has anyone else gone through this? I just wanted a 'driver'. Now, I'm not sure if I should thank Tim for the carpet or not. |

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
Same thing happened to me- except all I started out to do was replace the SM420 tranny with a NV3500 on the '67 GMC SWB. One year later the engine is out the cab gutted, new rockers, floors, in-bed fuel tank, shaved gutters & door handles and right now i'm in the midst of converting the leaf spring rear over to coil. Keep in mind- that NV3500 tranny is still sitting in a box under my bench!!! Stuff can get out of control real quick like with these trucks.

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
Thats how my engine rebuild started. I just wanted to fix an exhaust leak. Thought the donut was leaking on drivers side. Broke all three stud in manifold, take manifold off, break one stud in manifold because rusted to manifold. Can't take it off, can't get drill in to drill out. Take engine out to fix exhaust leak, Oh hell, while I have it out might as well rebuild it. Don't have the painting bug yet though. LOL.

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
if you are anything like me it will take you so long to finish that the carpet will end up being the thing that looks the worst and then you will have to explain to your wife that you have to start all over again.

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
I just took the bed offa mine to ease in the bag set up and gas tank and First thing I thought was " I should paint the cab now that I have easy access to the back" which means, replacing rockers, gutting, cab mounts and God knows what else!!

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't gotten to some of the other extremes, but more than once I've been to,"since I'm doing this, I might as well......." But it's only happened within the last month. I am in control. Honest, I am in control. "Where did that 9/16" socket go?"

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
When I got my`72 K2500 in`01 I couldn`t stand the covered seat, dash pad,arm rests,or the later steering wheel.I bought all new repro stuff and put it on immediately. The carpet is original and has 1,000 burn spots to boot.It has always bugged me.But,one reason or another has always kept me from touching it.Good thing, huh?

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
Good thing you didn't decide to replace something really important. Just think of the snowball that would have happened over that!

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
Well, I have been working on getting this painted for a couple weekends, and here's a little update. I'm not a painter, but I'm fairly happy the way this turned out. It needs to be wet sanded and buffed out, but so far its looking better.

Re: Don't replace your carpet!
That was one of my daughter's favorites when she was little! I read it to her at bedtime so often, she had it memorized... and the book was in tatters. Thanks for the memory!
