Re: im burnout
priorities..
in today's economic times getting a loan for "personal pleasure" is not advisable.. click linky in signature to see "pain" ive done my truck entirely off side work alone.. a "quick fix: turned into three months of parts gathering and a daily obsession/ OCD disorder just to get it "finished" without totally half assing it... college is.WAY MORE IMPORTANT then your truck period... not to preach.. but instead of college i pursued cars.. i failed.. i joined the army to compensate... im now disabled.. im NOW after 10 years of "hell" able to work on my chevy... it took alot of learning, pain and permanent disability to learn "priorities".. just to know some things are best left unrushed... not trying to freak you out but i do not recommend taking a loan on something that dosent absolutely need to be done... take time, save monies, do extra work, and aspire to fulfill your dreams.. do not take the easy way out and owe forever on it.. college isnt over, and someday you might really need the monies you have to pay for that loan on..... every project is achievable.... you just have to have the drive to do it the right way...... good luck

Re: im burnout
I am going to assume you have loas out for school. Either for the whole thing, or for most of it.
In a few years when you graduate, you'll be enterring the job market with anywhere between $10,000 and what... $50,000 in debt. You'll be getting a better job, but you'll be hurting for money for the next 5 or 8 years... depending on your payback commitment. I think getting a loan to make your truck pretty would be a bad move personally. |

Re: im burnout
Sometimes it is easier just to buy a finished truck as there are a ton of them out there. My 20 year old son wants to go fast and wants to compare himself to me the only difference is that my pay has several more zeros behind it so if he came to me to get a loan to finish his bucket I would laugh so hard that it aint even funny how hard I will be laughing. Mind you I have built him so far two vehicles a single turbo 2jze Supra that went 11.40 at a 126mph in the quarter, a 96 chevy 1500 all hooked up but thats it anything else that he wants he pays and builds it him self I will still help him even financially for
MPORTANT things and NO drag racing is not important If you have champagne taste in beer wage I suggest you finish your schooling then you will have plenty of time to play with trucks.... exactly what I said to him Like I told my oldest son I went to school and FINISHED then I started working and making lots of $$$$ thats is why now I have as many toys as I please everything in time....... good luck!!! I am not preaching I am giving a real life story of what is going on in my own home...

Re: im burnout
Loans suck. I owe more in interest on my student loans then the principal. I won't say how much, but enough to buy a very nice truck. Compound interest is the Devil.

Re: im burnout
Many very wise and profound replies...Schooling is a must...Repay loans is a must...finishing a truck is optional. Patience is the key!!

Re: im burnout
Exactly - your priority should never be your truck - that's a luxury.

Re: im burnout
great advice from all, I'll ad my experience.
I got my '69 during my senior year of college (grad. '04) and just got it running last summer. I resisted the temptation many times to get a loan, even when the economy was waaaay better than it is now and personal loans were MUCH easier to come by. To ad to this, my first job out of school was a Sales Manager for Cloyes Gear & Products (makers of the "True Roller" timing chains), where I managed the High Performance Products line. My main accounts were Summit, Jegs, Edelbrock, Comp Cams etc... Which meant I got to be tortured by seeing so many 'finished' rides, badass motors, and primo speed parts it was unreal - I couldn't afford any of it. SEMA, PRI, numerous drag races, you name the show, we had a booth there. As a matter of fact, just looking on this site now makes me wish I could get my truck the way I want it overnight, but we all know that will never happen. Just take your time, focus on your priorities and just enjoy the truck, even if it's not in ideal condition now. I'm sure there are a lot of guys who just wish they had a truck that even runs. Just be patient, life will always bring you things that you won't expect, that truck will be the least of your worries in the long run!

Re: im burnout
I think it all comes down to weather or not you got a silver spoon in your mouth.
If you realy do Ide say go for it but if you dont have it like that than heres what ide do. Talk to you parents, get a real good look the econemy , and make a plan for your life that even if you cant attain it right away leads you close enough to be doing good in the years to come. In my life I never even had a wooden spoon in my mouth lol so I learned a important lesson right off. One can either sacrifice wants now and focus on needs in hope that in the future youll have taken care of all needs enough to sit back and let the wants come to you . Or maybe get all your wants now and be stuck when somthing you need comes around. Of course it may look diferent on my side of the moon but then again Ive had to live in my truck and the decision to take all the money i had to get a deer permit so ide have food was a life or death choice I had to make while people my age where going to collage. Had anything of worked out diferently so I had a even chance at going to collage.....Nothing would have stood in my way. Sacrifice now for a better tomarrow or play around now and maybe lose your future? seems cutt and dry to me but everyones different. |

And if you dont start getting those payments in theyll take your butt off to jail. Wouldnt take much for an accedent that putt you in the hospital for some time or a death in the family that was all on you from planning the details to the expences and holding the rest of the family together to make a grade drop enough to steal your future from you. Point is no one really knows what the future will bring so best you can do is try to plan 2 steps ahead and work hard to maximize your good choices and minimize your regrets. I wish you good luck. |

Re: im burnout
Go to College. Park the truck. I had a 74 chevy LUV when in high school and was laid off at an auto parts store. IRS was on my a$$ because of some bad advice from the manager of my store so I took a job washing dishes in a restaurant. Soon after that I met this beautiful waitress and then she was preggers...
Now I'm 40 and FINALLY was able to aquire that 71 GMC I always wanted, but I still need to scrimp and save to be able to do anything to her. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change the fact I have a great wife and 2 great kids, but if I had made better choices as a young'n I would be much better off right now financially. Patience is the most important thing you can learn at your age. Dan
