hauling a frame to scrap...

So i am working on my '63 slowly but surely, and i also have a 1980... i have been tossing back and forth the idea of pulling the 350/350 and 5 lug front off the '80 model to put on the '63.

If i do that... with no front end, what is gonna be my best bet to get it hauled off the the junk yard, seeing as i wont be able to sit and wait for people to come pull parts off of it.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas of a good way to get it gone with no front end under it..

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

well i have one of those...

and excuse my stupidity but how will i get it on the trailer... or should i take the cross member off on the trailer, and in which case how do i get it off once i get to the yard..?

i have lost many nights sleep wondering how i can get my '63 driving and what to do with the '80

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

the junk yard will giv eyou free pick up towing..
also call them and see what they will offer for the remnants before you ask for a free tow.
it could be cheaper to have a tow truck...
whatever u feel u need to do

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

are you talking about selling it for scrap at a recycling place or taking it to a junk yard?

If you can't winch or come-a-long it up on the trailer, then put it on there and then pull the suspension stuff....or swap the '63 parts over to the 80 so it will roll

the metal recycling places around here have a big claw or electro-magnet and will pick it off the trailer for you

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

The rear suspension is still on it?

I'd turn the frame itself into a trailer by adding a trailer coupler to the front (make a brace that goes crosscar to the frame rails); put the wheels on the rear and "tow away"...

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

If it is that just a frame get three buddys to come help you lift the frame and put it on the trailer. Or like I did with my 87' frame torch it in three sections and that makes it much easier to move.

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

Two guys can put it on a trailer with no front crossmember on it, that's easy. If your neighbor has no muscle, then yank the rear end off too.

Or take a sawzall to it and throw it in the truck of the car.

Re: hauling a frame to scrap...

My preferred method is "sawzall". Cut it into "man sized" chunks and hual it your self. Around here, if I hual it to the scrapyard (~20 miles away) they pay .03 cents a pound for the whole carcass or .05 cents a pound for clean steel and cast iron, but this has to be cut up and separated.

I scrap out 2 or 3 cars a year, I strip what I can sell or store, cut up and sort the rest and stack it on my trailer 'till I get a load worth hualing to the scrapper. all the non scrapable stuff, interior, plastic , glass etc. goes to the land fill in my weekly garbage pickup. The independant scrappers are pretty competitive around here and will pick out the aluminum and copper that I miss and take the (cut up) sheet metal and chrome for free so it works well for all concerned. X2 depending on whats left on the frame. my wife (she's small) and i picked mine up and moved it clear across the yard and driveway. if its still got the rearend on you could pick up the front and set it on the trailer and drag it up.
