Just got complete new exhaust......HELP

Well I picked up my 73 from the muffler shop today. I had stock manifolds put back on with 2 1/2" duels with Flowmaster 50s with pipes exiting after rear tire one on each side. Also an "H" pipe was added ?

I must say I really like the tone sound but it just dosent sound very loud. I am a little dissapointed It sounds decent watching it go down the road... I am debating whether to have flowmster 40 put on instead. Although someday I might put a camper and do some traveling with the wife and dont want to have an annoying exhaust. But honestly I think the whole camper thing is a ways out..

So what should I do ??? Do you think the 40s in my setup will be to loud?? I just really like the tone of my 50s just need some decibals..... I should state that I have a stock 454 with TH400...

Any advice would be great as I only have about a week or so to decide if I want to switch... The shop said they will remove the 50s and put 40s on for $80.00

Are 40s to loud on long road trips??

used to have the exact thing on my 81, has a 454 and had a full 3-inch exhaust with h-pipe, and the 40's were pretty loud, i loved it, but no one else did,

Yeah you are stuck in the twilight zone of flowmasters. 50's are quiet 40's are loud. It's an opinion matter. Each person's will be different. You could always put one 50 series on, and one 40 series on.

I guess I really should have had the 40s put on first then switched them out if it was to loud...darn it..

Big difference between 40s and 50s ??

If you want it a bit louder, add 3.5" tips. Those act as an echo chamber and will increase the volume.

hate to say it AGAIN, but i agree w/ Ken on the tips! i'd let the 50's burn in a bit. they WILL get louder. and later on down the road a nice set of headers will make that baby scream muscle! imo the 40's get to be too obnoxious after awhile...

Re: Just got complete new exhaust......HELP

If you want it to sound saweet, put some 4"x24" tips on there. I had those on my 97 Vortec 454, oh man did it sound good.

When I first put the exhaust on, used the original 2 chambers and wanted to take them off it was so loud. Almost sounded like glasspacks. Found those tips, put them on straight out the back, and it mellowed out the noise, but gave it a sweet rumble and made any car guy look.

Re: Just got complete new exhaust......HELP

I have the 40's and would rather have 50's. It sounds good when you get on it. 2800 rpms it starts to get load, by the time you get to 5500 the truck will drawn out any harley lol (that and spank them at the same time). But for daily driving its just too load. I have hearing problems for my machining days, that and the audio systems I had in the past. I can't go to a club with out ear plugs.
