TH400 fluid capacity

How many quarts of fluid to fill a passenger car TH400 with stock pan after draining just the pan while just front of vehicle was jacked up? I put 3 quarts in and it still won't shift at all. Assume I have no dipstick.

it can be anywhere from 8-12 depending on torque converter and all. Just add a quart at a time until it shifts don't wanna overfill it, they can be fussy if overfilled

Holy crap, that many quarts? I don't think my torque convertor drained out completely, the front tires were off the ground only a few inches.

Re: TH400 fluid capacity

My book says 9.5 quarts for 68 C20 TH400. I think pans are the same for cars and trucks. Mine ain't deep, even the filter was touching the bottom.

Re: TH400 fluid capacity

Ok, I put 3 quarts in it tonight and the bottom half of the torque convertor must be able to carry at least another 2 or 3 quarts. SO, I guess I need to add about 3 or 4 more quarts. Thanks guys.
