Wheels on '05 Sierra

I recently inherited an '05 GMC Sierra, short bed, 4.3, 4x4. It has the stock 17" 6 lug wheels with the circle of 8 holes around the outside. I'm not crazy about the wheels and thought about just painting them black but they already have rust on them behind the surface. Long story short, I want different wheels. To top it off, two of the tires on the truck have slices in the sidewall. No idea what from, as I just got this truck, but It'll need new ones anyway since they have 40K on them...

It seems like now is the time to do it all, different wheels and new tires. This will be a daily driver, and I've got other projects going on now so I don't want to go crazy. I'm looking at getting the 16" steel wheel with the 5 spoke design that came stock on the 2000-2002 era trucks but I don't know if they will clear my front rotors and calipers? Any ideas?

Thanks.

I dont think anything smaller then a 17" wheel will fit an 05 an up. I know they won't on the trucks for a fact, which probably has the same front calipers you do.

Ghost,
I've never even seen those in any of the craigslist or ebay hunting I've done, not bad...These are what's on mine now. Not my favorite.

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

I'd never seen them either, but they were an option in '05...I like 'em.

Ive seen those wheels on almost every Sierra around here.... but anyways, on 03+ you cant run anything smaller than 17 without grinding the calipers down

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

My Sierra was built in Indiana. I will probably start seeing them everywhere now....two weeks ago I had never even paid much attention to anything past 1972.

Of all the GMC's I saw during the search for the new truck, only one had those wheels on it and I got it.

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

Crazy...I do a search for "6 Lug Wheels" on Craigslist for several different areas here every couple of days and those have never popped up. I also keep an eye out when I see others on the road just to get an idea of what else is available. I've also checked out a network of junkyards (www.car-part.com) and don't remember seeing those as an option in their little photos. That's nuts.

Originally, I was HOPING to find some 15s or 16s and reap the benefits of a slightly cheaper tire, too. Guess not. Looks like I'll be painting the ones I have.

I'm also in the same boat as Gray Ghost, until I ended up with this truck (sort of unplanned) I never paid much attention to anything that wasn't pre '87.

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

You still have your other vehicle, correct? If so, then if you just want yours black (otherwise happy), get them sandblasted before painting.
I've also had a fair bit of luck with body shops, asking them to paint things when they paint another vehicle.

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

you need to search for sierra wheels, or silverado wheels.... alot of people that sell wheels are not going to ad the words six lugs in there

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

1Lo,
I should have mentioned it before...the search engine on the sites I've been using ignores the "6 lug" part anyway. It shows me everything, 4,5,6,7,8 etc. I only do that hoping that it will pick up on the "6" that most seller would put in there...
It looks like I'm stuck with mine for now. I don't want to spend more than $50 per wheel and it's looking like the only steel wheel made is the one I already have. I'll play with photoshop and see what it would look like with black wheels...maybe I'll get really lazy and just leave them the way they are. I'll get used to them eventually.

Thanks.

Re: Wheels on '05 Sierra

They make chrome covers for your wheels too, not sure how much they are though
