72 Chevy big block motor mount Header problems
Hello. My recent project is a 72 Chevy C10 LWB 2 wheel drive. I pulled the mostly disconnected 350 out in favor of a 75 4 bolt 454. I got the motor and trans all bolted in and most electrical hooked up then proceeded to install my passenger side header from Summit and then moved on to my driver side which of course wouldn't fit because it hits the frame part of the motor mount. After doing some research it appears I need to have the big block style motor and frame mount for these headers to work. Does anyone have a different idea that has worked for them? or does anyone have a motor mount setup for a big block 72 for sale? My project is basically at a stand still so any friendly advice would be appreciated...Thanks very much.

they come up fairly often on the part board, maybe you can scan over there and luck out. Also, the search function on the site rocks, so you may try that to find some solutions. HTH

i have a 72 and i put an 86 454 in it and my headers wouldnt fit so we put motor mounts from an 80's pick up and bolted it to the frame rails then just welded the bottom of the mounts to the cross member.. its been workin out for me so far

You can also use the 73 and up SBC mounts as well, they are very similar to the 72 only BBC mounts.

If or when you buy stock mounts pay VERY close attention to what you are getting. A lot of these mounts look similar until you compare side by side or try to fit them in place. Ask me how I know. I have a real nice set of P-series mounts I'll sell ya. JK. I would never pass them off to someone that didn't want P-series mounts. Good Luck.

Thanks to all who helped. What I ended up doing was getting some tubular motor/frame mounts that were from Performanceonline. These sell brand new for $130.00+ shipping for the frame and motor mounts and bolts. That's pretty close to what most of the used BB mounts are priced for here and elsewhere when you can find them. The headers from Summit for the 72 C10 2wd fit just fine with no issues. The mounts bolt up with no drilling required, the only thing I had to do was unbolt the brake lines where they are secured on the cross member so the mounts could slide under them. They also raise the front of the engine approx. 1/2 inch higher than it sat with the small block mounts. The water pump setup I have is the long one and it is close to the radiator. I used the original fan spacer which is about 1 inch thick and a flex fan which gives me about an inch or so of clearance between the fan and radiator. I should also note that my radiator is the heavy duty thick one. I used the stock transmission cross member with my TH-350. Thanks again. what did you use for a fan? i just did this swap with those same mounts and only have 2 inches between water pump and radiator so im stuck until i can find a fan that works!! thanks!

I used a Hayden flex fan part# 3569 from Oreilly auto parts with the stock 1 inch spacer that was on my 350. I have had no cooling problems at all. Good luck with yours...
