When did GM start using clear coat?
Do any of you know when GM started using a clear coat on their vehicles? I thought the cars were early 80's and it seems like the trucks later. I have an 87' V10 that has been repainted, but has no clear coat. Just wondered if originally, it would have had one from the factory. Thanks.

Re: When did GM start using clear coat?
No. A 1987 R/V (pickup) was "High solid Enamel".
I believe the 1988 GMT400 pickups were base coat/clear coat, and I also think the R/V utilities (Suburban and Blazer) also went bc/cc at some point ( but am willing to be corrected). K

Re: When did GM start using clear coat?
Thanks for your response. Noting your past GM history on your identifier, I believe you! Do you know if the vehicle paint code is noted anywhere on the truck? I know mine is "light blue metallic" but don't know where that is listed or the code for it.

Re: When did GM start using clear coat?
Well - don't believe me too much....
The only part I'm sure about was that the '87 RV pickup was enamel; the rest of that I am not so sure... The only place I know of where the paint code is shown is on the SPID label in the glovebox. It should read something like "72U" (or whatever the appropriate paint code is). K

Re: When did GM start using clear coat?
It depends on the color if it is painted in a bc/cc or not. The SPID label will have a row of numbers across the bottom that will identify it as such. You will see a WA number (WA8555 is black, for example) and it may (or may not) say BC/CC after that. Most of the metallic colors started bc/cc in 88 or 89, some of the solid colors (white, black, victory red) were single stage through the mid 90's.
