Shaved handles is the process of removing the outside door handles on a car/truck. To make it work an electric solenoid is connected to the latch release mechanism inside your door and is wired to a switching device to activate it on demand, which back in the day was a hidden button but nowadays is done via remote control. It's relatively inexpensive and easy to rig up. The hardest part is welding in the patches to cover the holes where the manual handles used to be. Here's a link to one of the better kits out there.

There is an emergency latch release system that you can buy in case your battery dies. It is usually not included in the kit, but the extra $50 is worth it in only one use.

A guy I work with has an old model A hot rod with shaved handles. He got the emergency release kit as well. While he was installing it he was inside and shut the door. A wire got pinched and blew a fuse locking him INSIDE the car until his wife got home from work. He had the inner door handles removed at the time! Just had to share that story. To resond to your question, there are many reasonably priced kits available and installation is pretty straight forward.

We haven't let him live it down. We told him maybe he should put an emergency release on the inside too!

Geeeze, with all those potential pitfalls, why do it? Lots of time, money and effort for minimal effect, IMO.

i wouldnt say minimal effect. i like being able to pop my doors open with the click of a remote....and when your getting carjacked they have no handle to grab

and yes there are so many pros and cons to shaving the door handles...but to each their own. i love the look personally. but it depends on the vehicle.

personally i think the effect adds to the outer appearance of a ride if thats what you're looking for. i plan to do it cuz i've always wanted to, and because i have always hated emblems, body side molding, etc.... hey, to each his own and thats what separates our ride from the guy next to us. i appreciate the lines and style of a vehicle and handles usually do not add to that, not to say that there are some exceptions, but not in this case unless you are a purist which i am not. i say do it if thats what "you" want.

No need to go the electric route if you don't wanna. I was gonna run a bike cable with a loop on the end hidden in the wheel well that connects with the door opening rod. Pretty basic and works great when you leave the factory door locks in.

in my old mazda i used gm power door lock accuators and hid the button inside the the mirrors, only had about $20 in the whole set up. and from past experience it pays to have a back up plan.
