temp gauge questions

My temp gauge is stuck on hot and has since I got the truck. I suspect something with the gauge is bad not the sending unit. Does that sound right?

The temp gauge sending unit has only one wire connected is that correct?

In a stock set-up is the gauge connected to the circuit board on the gauge cluster or are there supposed to be wires running up to it?

no wires. If you have a wire, it is probably to bypass a messed up circuit board.
If the guage drops when the key is off, and pegs when turned on, then odds are, it is the wire from the sending unit to the guage (through the harness) is grounded. Look at the green wire on the drivers side head, see if it is melted on the manifold.

The gauge never drops with keys on or off. The wire was probably melted at one point and a repair was done because now there's a brown wire there and spliced half way up to the fire wall to the green wire.

I bet you are right, it probably melted at one point. But like LHM said, the guage is connected to the printed ckt board on the back. There should also be a resistor under that in between the terminals. Is that all there?

I should have noticed and mentioned that the oil and battery gauges are all not working as well.

The battery gauge stays in the middle position wether the battery is hooked up or not.

The oil pressure gauge stays all the way on low.

And of course the temp gauge stays pinned to hot.

I'll check it out after work but any ideas on what would cause all 3 to not work. I mean is there 3 different problems here or 1 problem causing all 3 to not work.
