Re: tranny gearing
Basically higher numbers=lower gearing.Lower gearing gives more torque and higher gearing gives more speed at a given engine RPM.The concept is that the gearing changes the speed of the output RPM.Tire size also has an effect on this.
Try plugging in some numbers to the calc I linked and it may help you understand. http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html

Re: tranny gearing
I have the same issue (3/4 ton ofcourse) and wish I could actually make use of 1st [granny] gear as an actual gear (i.e. starting from a stop) someday...haha.

Re: tranny gearing
I know you've ridden a 10 speed right?
In 1st gear it is easy to take off but you are soon pedaling real fast but not moving very fast(in your truck the engine is turning real fast but the truck isn't going fast) In 10the gear (4th in your truck) it is VERY hard to take off but when you are up to speed you can pedal at a comfy rate (engine turns at a slow speed). If you were to travel at speed in 1st gear you could not pedal fast enough to keep up and would fall off the pedals (your engine would spin to fast and come apart) The super low 1st gear in trucks makes it easy to get moving when you are hauling a trailer with a heavy load, but is not needed in normal driving conditions. If your engine makes great power at any given rpm, the more gears you have, the easier it is to maintain THAT rpm while still gaining speed. Is that simple enough?
