Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Okay! I have just completed the driver's side door. I replaced the door pins & bushings, the 2 piece vent window rubber, and all of the door/window related weatherstripping. All I can say is, IT IS A PITA!!!!
I still have to do this mess on the passenger side and have only figured out a few shortcuts...such as removing the entire door and cutting the old door pins in half to get them out, rather than beating on it with a hammer for half an hour each. You can take the vent window/ window channel out of the door without removing the glass, but it is a mother to get it in with the new rubber. The actual vent window has to be taken apart to a very large degree to install the new rubber, and it is a PITA to put back together. I have some pics that just kinda show the work in progress. Picture #1: The door panel is removed and I fished the wiring for the pw, pdl, and pw motor out of the door. Picture #2: You can kinda see where I had to drill out pop rivets out to get the rubber "hose" out of the door...you can see part of the lower rivet still in the door. Picture #3: Door is off and the pins are removed. I ended up using a right angle grinder and a cut off wheel to cut the pins in half and then drive them out...MUCH easier than pounding out the old ones...MUCH!!! Picture #4: My "special" bushing installation tool to prevent damaging the new bushings. Worked like Butta. Picture #5: New bushings are in!!! Last edited by nlped; 08-12-2009 at 07:46 PM. Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
And the vent window channels seperated.
And I bought the weatherstripping from "The Weatherstrip Store" on Egay, but the stuff actually fits really well, just a PITA to install. That isn't there fault it's GM's. |

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Hey seriously - you rock. I'm *just* about to jump down this hole myself (picked up a new vent window at the pull a parts place - gettin ready to order the stripping).
These pics make the task a lot clearer. How much easier is it to close your doors now? I priced out all the weather stripping from LMC I think and it came to like $150 per door. Was the Weatherstripping Place cheaper? |

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
The vent window is indeed a PITA. The rivets aren't too bad actually, it is getting the L shaped rubber in place. Truly a come-to-jesus event. I did my passenger side, and driver is next. Nice to not have wind noise though!!! I got all my gaskets/fuzzies from ClassicChevy and they were very high quality, ie not from Taiwan. Actually made in the USA. Amazing.
To the OP, I'm not clear what you are recommending to remove the hinge pins. Did you unbolt the door from the hinge first and then cut the pins? My passenger side didn't need new bushings so I left well enough alone for now.

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Cut the pin, and push the halves out. If you unbolt the door, it will have to be realigned. Leaving the door alone and cutting the pin, it goes right back into place.

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Can you get to the pin to cut it with the door still on though? (I'm at work, truck is at home, otherwise I'd just go look :-)

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
I marked the door hinge locations on the door itself then physically removed the door from the truck. Then I masked the fender with painters tape, and then I cut the original door hinge pin in 2 and drove the upper out and the lower practically fell out.
The 'pivot rivet" was easy once I acquired the tool and modified a punch to seat the stock rivet. I used the modified punch to expand the rivet enough to get the tool to actually roll the bottom of the rivet. Oilbrner...no, you have to remove the door from the hinges to get easy access to the pins. Jonboy...once you replace the pins you will probably have to realign the door from where it has been sagging for so long. The stock door hinges are extremely flimsy and don't retain there shape. I have already ordered a door alignment tool from Eastwood tools...Thanks Glock351ipsc !!! The door still fits exactly like it did...saggy, but without any up or down play and a very firm closure, but with this $31 tool, including freight, it should end up closing "like butta" (quoting Glock again). Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
BTW...I just finished installing the passenger side rubber and it went MUCH quicker and there was much less profanity this time. I have a small amount of wind noise out of this side, but now I know it is because the vent window latch needs "help". Does anyone know of a source for rebuilding the stock latches?

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
One way to get rid of wind noise is to use dielectric grease on the weatherstripping. It softens the rubber which makes it seal better.

I'm pretty sure all the latch parts are available from vendors, ie ClassicParts. Here is a link I'm still not understanding cutting the pins however. You noted that you marked the original hinge locations and the removed the door, masked the fender and then cut the pins. Later in the same thread you said that you could get to the pins to cut them without removing the door. When I looked the other night it sure seemed tough to get anything other then maybe a Dremel in there to cut the pins with the doors on... what I'm I missing. Is this the eastwood tool

Strange that a passenger vent window latch would be that worn, unless there was a heavy smoker on that side of the cab frequently, or it is bent from attempted intrusion at some point in the past.

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Hey, Oilburner. Yes that is the tool, and it works great.
I never said that you could cut the pins with the doors in place, that was "Jonboy". I didn't see anyway to do it with the door in place either. I did it just like I said in post #9. Hope this helps all! |

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
For the miniscule amount of time and effort it take for the tool to do it's job, you almost feel ripped off at first. But when you realize that your door now shuts like butta, you feel vindicated!

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Doh! Before I caught up on this thread, I removed my driver side door and had to realign it by hand. Alone. I found out too late how frikken heavy the thing was.
I will be investing in that Eastwood tool before tackling the other side. Good find! |

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Get yourself one of these from Harbor Freight:
It's a door removal dolly. Hooks to the door latch, and grips the top at the window opening, then adjust the jack at the bottom. Unbolt the hinges from the door, and wheel it away. $60 from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=40386

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
Hey Glock, I didn't have access to that cool tool so I overcame & adjusted. I used the old hydraulic shop stool. It actually worked great...I did have to keep a hand on the door to control the pitch, but as far as height and level it handled it great...And it was all that I could think of
And, you're right. The alignment tool was well worth the $31. Thanks again!!! Cheers All, Ed |

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
LOL, that's too funny, because when I had to replace the window regulator on my 70's passenger door, I used the same hydraulic shop tool to get it off and on!

Re: Vent windows, door pins & door weatherstripping
I guess it all has to do with what tools you have at hand. On the pins, I usually do cut them in half before removing the door. You can use either a cut off wheel or a pneumatic saw with a hacksaw blade in it. I do have to admit that I try to find the lazy way of doing thins, though.
