I finally got the wheels that I have been looking for-- BUT they are painted.. painted aluminum rims-- 15x10's- how can I effectively remove the paint and not harm the wheels?? muratic acid wash them??? any experience here would be GREATLY appreciated-- oh and after the paint is removed, I will polish them .

go to home depot or lowes and hardware store should have "paint striper" just follow directions carefully on the can you have to let it sit on for awilre and it will get all mooshy and you just scrap it off they have other kinds depending on the type of paint but heres a fairly cheap one

but doesnt stripper damage the aluminum?

You can have them media (plastic beads) blasted. It'll ONLY remove the paint & leave the rims ready for a nice polish.

I also think soda blasting will do the trick. It's also very enviormentally friendly.

I did a set once and I think I found some stripper that said it was safe for use on aluminum

I have heard that aircraft stripper will work on alum, and not harm it. Several third generation camaro owners use it to paint their alum wheels.

i have used aircraft aluminum stripper in the past but the stuff is a major mess and pain in the rear to get in all the small spots. ive done about 4 sets this way and it doesnt harm the aluminum but this last time on my slots i used the sand blaster w/ some 30 grit sand and it worked awesome but i have ALOT of sanding and polishing ahead of me to get the pitting from the sand out.

so the moral of my story

is to media blast them with some real fine media from eastwoods so it doesnt pit the finish too bad and they should be ready for some polishing without the sanding part. good luck and post some pics of them before and after.

use oven cleaner,i found some old keystone mags that had been painted a while back that had paint all over them.it took it right off. what ever you use ,do the back first to be sure it doesn't ruin your rims.

Just use a rag and some good o acetone and bam its done. Its just gonna take some elbow grease. It works great.

I just finished stripping the clear coat off some factory rims using aircraft aerosol paint remover. This is the 4th set of rims I've done and it's messy but works well. I haven't had any issues with it affecting the aluminum.

aircraft coating remover works but it is a mess you might have to brush it off to get it out of any small crevices but it shouldn't hurt em.

I am glad I was not going to have to be the one to break this news! I agree, use Bulldog brand. It works great every time. I have had the cheap stuff work good one can and poorly the next. Take your time, have a lot of water to rinse with and do it in a very well ventilated area. I like to wear a mask and you need gloves when using it.

ok- I used the airplane paint remover in aerosal-- it is water solvent-- after testing in a small area-- I then proceeded to the car wash-- sprayed on-- waited a minute or two and washed off===it took 95% of all of the paint off of the wheels!!!! THANKS GUYS

Western Bullets . I love that wheel . I used to have a magazine article with a stepside running those wheels . It was perfect . They look great on your truck .
