Tell me about your nuts.....
Your lug nuts that is. I am trying to put center caps from a late model (2002-2007) truck on my 83 and the lugs nuts I have are metric. So where did you guys get your nuts? Oh, and it's a 3/4 ton...i think that may be important...

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
Left...&...Right.
. . . Are you trying to find some that fit your original lug studs, and the new center caps? I guess I am not sure. Why don't the originals fit the caps?

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
The 83 studs are SAE, not metric, and the original nuts don't have the threads to screw the little black plastic "nuts" onto.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
im a bit confused.
you wanna run the late model center caps on the older truck right? so you woud need the lug nuts off the late model truck as they have the threads on the outside of them to screw the "black nuts" on the center cap onto. is your problem that the late model lug nuts arent the right thread size to screw onto the older truck? |

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
The late model lug nuts are metric, the 83 wheel studs are not. So I want to know if I have to swap out all of my wheel studs or if there are different lug nuts, like off of a 90's series, that I can use instead.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
I ran across the same problem with my suburban the new stuff is 14MM the earlier is 9/16. i tapped the metric nuts to 9/16 a time consuming task but it worked.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
Did you drill out the old threads before tapping them? What size drill bit did you use?

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
Correct me if I am wrong, but if the original wheel studs on the older truck are 9/16 and the newer trucks are 14mm, aren't the older wheel studs slightly larger in diameter? If so, I don't think I would jeopardize myself or my vehicle by going clinebarger's route. I know that some companies use to offer conversion lug nuts for this, but I have only seen them in the 1/2" size.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
You dont have to drill them. i can see your concern nlped but it cut nice looking threads and i tested one on a junk truck and snaped the stud. 9/16 is bigger than 14 mm. if you want to buy 32 lug nuts go for it. its worked for 5 years even with tire shops over torqueing them.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
I wasn't being critical, Clinebarger, just voicing a possible concern. The ones like this that I bought...way back...were actually made by Dorman, but I don't know who makes these. I was offering an option

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
Buy some of these.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/32-LU...Q5fAccessories That's what I used They are just like the newer lug nuts except they have a 9/16-18 thread like the old trucks need. I have a set of these on mine, works like a charm. |

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
They are cheaper than the OE nuts, however you cannot tap the metric nuts for the 9/16 studs. You will only have half threads in there which is never good. I tried it on one of the metric nuts and it didn't work well.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
It DOES work. sounds like you didnt use any lube. wheel bearing grease works good. And trying not to plow through it in one shot helps too. If i can snap a stud off with them that tells me the stud is weaker than the nut

I do this for a professional living and don't recommend it. thats my professional opinion. if you like a half assed job then do one. I'm not going to.

Re: Tell me about your nuts.....
I picked up a set from "lugking2005" I'll report in on how good or bad they are when i get them. They probably are chinese crap, but what isnn't these days? I found a label on the wiring harness in my 2006 GMC canyon that said "made in china" SO MUCH FOR BUYING AMERICAN!

I got mine at ezaccessory.com for my son's 78 and my 85. The part number is 98-0009. They worked great and the quality was OK.
